Hi,

I''m currently looking at buying an engagement ring, and have been reading the PS forums for the past month trying to pick up some advice. At the moment I''ll looking for a diamond with a good cut around 0.80 carats.

Can anyone comment on the following stone on bluenile?

http://www.bluenile.com/round-diamond-1-carat-or-less-signature-ideal-cut-f-color-vvs2-clarity_LD01323446?filter_id=1

Will the medium blue fluorescence be a concern? I''ve heard differing views on fluorescence - some say it adds to the diamond''s beauty and value, while others say it''s not good to have fluorescence. How should the line be drawn?

I''ve also been looking at the diamonds from JA and GOG but don''t seem to find much within the range I''m looking for (D-F colour, prefably VS1 and up). Is there any better way to supplement the search?

Thanks!

Welcome to Pricescope!

This diamond certainly looks promising! I take it VVS is your personal preference for clarity? Medium blue fluorescence shouldn''t be a concern, very occasionally, a diamond with strong blue or very strong may show negative effects such as the diamond looking cloudy in some lights, but this is unusual and that may be why you have heard that it isn''t good to have fluorescence. Med blue should be fine. As to where to draw the line, it is up to you....There are many here, myself included, who love fluorescence and consider it a positive feature of a diamond, as we love the violety blue glow that may be seen in some sunlight etc, but it is a personal choice.

Stone looks nice with a 0.9 HCA. Any special reason you are going for a VVS2?? You could go to a VS1 or VS2 even and have a stone with nothing being able to be seen by the naked eye... But it does look like a nice stone! Good luck!

Welcome Bluemonkies, I would try dropping your color and especially the clarity grade. Lots of eye clean SI-1 stones out there or even VS-2 are fine. At first I was sure a high color and high clarity grade was the way to go. I ended up buying a I color, VS-1 and spending more on the honey moon. Those inclusions are very microscopic in real life, and very difficult to see. By going a little lower you can also get a bigger diamond. As a guy, I would highly recomend that you look very carefully at the trade up policies of different vendors. Lots of women have decided to upgrade their orginal stone and get something "a little bigger". This may be your first but it probably will not be her only diamond. I hope that this helps and good luck hunting!

Thanks for the advice so far.

Actually I was thinking of going for a VS1 and was prepared to drop to a G colour but couldn''t really find much in the 0.80-0.83 range (for sentimental purposes).

As my girlfriend has pretty small fingers, I thought a larger stone might seem oversized and she wouldn''t be comfortable with it.

I did come across another two, but saw the inclusions at the center of the table which did make me have some second thoughts. And given the price differential (particularly with 4477), figured might be worth the while to go for a VVS2

I have a VS2 that supposedly has inclusions near the center. I''ve stared through my 30X loupe and never seen a thing. :) You can definitely drop the clarity a bit.
