Newbie - Please Help!!!!!

I need help/advice on purchasing an engagement ring.

Myself & GF have discussed getting engaged and are planning a trip to NY to pick out a ring together.
Trouble is we have no idea where to start. I have an idea of the type of ring GF would like, i.e princess cut centre stone with smaller side stones along the band but thats about as far as my knowledge of diamonds goes. We're just worried we'll get taken for a ride I suppose, we just want to get value for money.

Any suggestions/advice welcome.

Mark at Engagement Rings Direct is also fantastic and located in the diamond district in NY. I would certainly make a stop there too.
