This is my first post-I''ve been reading for a month now, but I need some help from you experts out there!

I''m on the verge of buying a RB diamond, and I''m very happy with the deal I''m getting. As a final precaution, I just wanted to make sure the numbers were good. I know the depth is a little shallow, but the diamond faces up really well, and it looks good to me. Here''s my problem:

I can''t find the crown or pavilion angles. The GIA cert is from 2004. I went to the GIA site to run the Facetware program, which doesn''t work well if I don''t know the angles. Also can''t run the HCA without that info. I''m guessing you guys will tell me to have a Sarin Report run on it, but I don''t want to assume that will be your answer. :)

Here''s the specs on the stone

Shape: Round
Carat weight: 0.82
Cut: None listed (Old Report)
Color: G
Clarity: SI1
Certificate: GIA 13200579

Depth: 59.9%
Table: 57.0%
Polish: VG
Symmetry: VG
Girdle: THIN TO MED
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 6.09*6.14*3.66

If you think I should get a Sarin or Mega...report, can you tell me how much that usually is, and how long it takes? I''m buying this stone in the Miami Jewelry District. Thanks so much for your help!

Ideal Scope

i contacted joseph tenhagen in the seybold building....will a trusted appraiser have something similar? i need to have it looked at anyways-i don''t have the crown or pav angles on the GIA dossier.

Call GIA and ask them. They may have the data in their internal files.

I think 2004 will not have angles.

You can buy an Ideal Scope. You can send it to Rich in Sarasota. You can just trust your eyes.

Lots of appraisers haven't heard of Ideal Scopes/PS, but that doesn't mean they're not good appraisers. Most appraisers do not go into the detail that the appraisers who post on PS do (didn't use to need it before the Internet.)

In case this stone your doesn't work out or you want something as a comparison, here is a very comparable stone. 0.7 HCA. GIA report from 2008. If a stone has a GIA report from 2004 does it make you wonder where it's been for 4 years?

0.82 G SI1

That is a great diamond, Swingirl-thanks for looking for me!

There are some great benefits from me buying through these guys in Miami

1. they are giving me a killer deal on a platinum setting with baguettes (small ones tcw .12)
2. I can get it in time for the weekend, when i'm hoping to propose
3. They have a store close to me in Fort Lauderdale for cleaning, service, etc.
4. Can use the stone to upgrade later

But there is some bummers as I'm finding out...mostly a no Money Back Guarantee-they charge a 10% restocking fee. I was engaged once before (didn't last too long) and the money back guarantee saved my butt! I'm not saying it's going to happen again, but it is nice for peace of mind.

That stone from the B&M in the platinum setting with baguettes is going to cost me $3600 plus tax, which is about $3812 with a TCW of .94. The one from jamesallen in a setting with slightly more diamond (.27 baguettes) will get my total price up to $4210-but increase my TCW to 1.09. 4k was the ceiling of my budget, so entertaining that thought gets me dangerously close.

Any thoughts? I'm so unsure. *sigh*

Whatmeworry- I think I owe you a steak dinner! Never thought I could call GIA directly as a consumer and get that info myself!

According to GIA, the crown angle is 34 and the pav angle is 40.8. HCA is 0.9 with Excellent in all 4 areas. I''m so relieved.

Swingirl, I am wondering where it has been the last 4 years, but for a stone with that rating in a platinum setting for 3600, I''m feeling much much better now. Now I should start thinking about how to ask her!

Yes, if you are satisfied with your ring choice then the only thing left is the proposal. You know your gal best but it seems like everyone loves an intimate dinner and a special moment. Good luck!
