I''ve been lurking here for some time now, and this place is AMAZING! I figure it is time for my first post.

I''d like to hear some opinions on a round brilliant I found online. I''ve been having trouble finding a stone I like at my local B&M stores and I''m considering buying online. I just don''t have much confidence with an online purchase and would love to hear some opinions on this stone and some advice for buying online.

Here''s some detail about the stone:

1.42 RB
AGS Cut Grade:0,0,0
Polish: Ideal
Sym: Ideal
Color: H
Clarity: SI2
Flo: None
Measurements: 7.17 * 7.22 * 4.46
Depth = 62.0%
Table = 55.9%
Pav angle = 40.9
Crown angle = 34.3
HCA: 1.4 – Excellent, within TIC range
Light Return: Excellent
Fire: Excellent
Scintillation: Very Good
Spread: Very Good

I looks to me like it could be a good stone, but I''m no expert. I don''t need a perfect stone, and don''t mind the SI2. I just want it to be eye clean, and have brilliance and fire. Is there anything that looks bad with this stone? Can it be an SI2 and still be eye clean?

I was thinking about purchasing the stone and a setting online from James Allen and bringing my purchase to a local 3rd party appraiser. If I don''t like it I have 30 days to send it back for a refund. Does this sound like a safe next step? Should I invest in an IdealScope for inspections?

Thanks a bunch for your help!

It looks like a great stone, a little deeper than my preference but good all the same and it is only a touch deep - no biggie. Sure SI2's can be eyeclean, although some may not be, this one looks like it could be. To make sure, ask Jim at JA and he will advise you on the 'eyecleanliness 'of this diamond. Due to the grading and vendor of this diamond, the appraisal is a matter of preference for you, but go ahead if it helps give you peace of mind, many online vendors encourage you to do so. You could invest in an Idealscope if you wish and or a small loupe so you can always identify your diamond, but again this is a preference. You could always get Jim to send you an Idealscope image of the diamond too if you like, it looks great to me.

Sounds like you have this buying online business down pat - great choice and well done!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome and for your advice. I just sent an email to JA about the cleanliness and the IS image. Hopefull I hear back soon.

Can you comment more on depth?

What effect will the depth have on the performance of the stone. Why do you prefer a slightly shallo wer stone?

Depth is a preference - in some cases you can lose a bit of face up size with a diamond, but 62% is still fine! It is just that I prefer more of a 60 - 61.5 if I was buying for myself - but the diamond you are considering is an excellent one and the depth is nothing to worry about. Depth doesn't have an effect on the performance of the diamond unless it is very deep or shallow and opinions of what these might be could vary. To give you an idea you can find some diamonds of a depth of well below 60% and well above it, so as I said before the depth on your diamond isn't a problem but my preference. What is very important to performance are all the components working together and the all important crown and pavillion angles help to dictate the path light will take through the diamond and back to your eye. But with the grading and cut of this diamond you have no need to worry - it's great!
