Hi all. I am in the process of ordering an e-ring, and need help with stone pricing. I know someone who knows someone who is selling the diamond from their e-ring b/c the engagement fell through. The stone is a RB, 1.0 carat, I, S1. I know there are a lot of other important factors, namely cut, but I do not have that info right now. I''ve been researching prices on bluenile, whiteflash, etc. and have some idea of the price range for that color, size, and clarity, but how much would you suggest I offer if the stone is previously owned. Should I expect much of a discount for that factor (seller is a private party)? I don''t want to make an insulting offer, but at the same time if I am going to pay list price for a similar stone, I''m going to go with the new one. Thanks in advance for your help!

why don't you see what they think is fair first? then go from there, once you know where they are coming from first then I think it helps in determining a "fair price" for both parties

ETA: I always like to make an offer once a base price is establish first, otherwise I don't want to offer too much and screw myself, and on the other hand I don't want to insult the seller if what I think is fair, is not what they had in mind

Typically, selling back a stone to the vendor will only get you at best 30-50% of the original value. So you go from there.

Get it independently appraised by an appraiser of your employment before finalizing the deal.

HI:

Yet this is important criteria. Trying to compare stones online that come with a lab cert (GIA, AGS) with those that don''t is similar to comparing apples to oranges. If the stone you are looking at doesn''t have any papers, have the ring appraised by someone you trust as you''ll want to know as much about the condition of the stone/ring, as the C''s.

Also there are articles written here about resale values, buying and selling jewellery and appraisals for different purposes. I suggest you do a llittle search here and read away!

cheers--Sharon
