I am a brand new member to this site, although I have been viewing for a while. I find a lot of the information to be helpful. So here is my question for the you folks out there.

I am going to be resetting my current center diamond 5/8 ct princess cut. I eventually want to get a larger stone like 1.20 ct or so colorless and at least VVS2 clarity, I want it to be at least 6 X 6 X no more than 4, so it doesn''t stick up to high, again princess cut. However, for now my old stone is going in. I have found a setting at Shane Co the engagement ring is 0.40 ct tw princess cut 8 stones, platinum and the man assisting me said it was G color and probably VS1 quality stones ($2100). They are currently looking for the matching band in platinum as I saw one I like in white gold 0.25 ct tw, it hasn''t come in yet (probably $1500 was what I was told). I''ve been shopping around as well and went to Kay Jewelers where they had a Leo Ingwer catalog. I found a setting I liked in the catalog, but haven''t seen it in person yet.

Does anyone know what kind of quality the use for their side stones?

The one I am looking at is 10 stones on the eng. ring 0.50 ct tw ($1935) and the wedding band is 0.65 ct tw ($2370). I want to make sure that when I get my new center stone in a year or so it isn''t going to look yellow and neither are the side stones. Also any opinons as to which would look better with the size center stones I''m interested in, I think the first two from Shane total 5.5mm and the two from Leo Ingwer total 6.5mm, I have small fingers and they will be sized to a 4! Here is a picture of the Leo Ingwer ones http://www.leoingwer.com/Details.asp?ID=13227 I do not have any pictures for the Shane Co ones. As a side note--My current setting was purchased from Kay''s, but I am not happy with the quality of the stones in the sides, they are obvious I1 or I2, but it wasn''t from the designer.

Are these fair prices as well?

I am also concerned because I found a similar looking setting at Amazon.com that looks like the Shane Co one and the stones on Amazon''s wesite are marked as I2. When I looked under the jewelers 10X loupe at Shane Co I didn''t see any inclusions.
Thank you so much for your advice I''m sure it will be helpful .

I''m younger and often get overlooked or ignored in the stores (believe it or not!) Also any pics out there of a 1.2 ct princess cut stone on a size 4 finger? THANKS!!!

Hi Sparkles and welcome..

I honestly have never been into a shane company so I can''t help you there. You can do a search here on them and see what comes up. $1500 for a WG .25 ctw sounds high to me. I had a shared prong eternity band made by WF in plat. that was .75ctw and it was the same amount.

Sorry I know my post was a bit confusing the wedding band in platinum not wg, they just didn''t have the platinum one in for viewing. Found some info on the Shane Co, didn''t find much on Leo Ingwer as fair as quality stones that are used in the rings. Thanks!

Also...Don''t know if this makes a diff, they are channel set pricess cut diamonds. I just want to be sure it sparkles

ok, i''m still not sure what type of ring you are wanting but here is a full princess channel set eternity band from Facets

G/H VVS-VS size 4 in plat..1.19 cts for $1701.

Am I close to what you are looking at and considering?

Yes that is what I am looking for. An engagement & wedding band semi-mount set, princess cut channel set diamonds (that are sparkly, not too yellow and with good clarity)! I like the picture of the one you sent me from facets, I am going to check out their site. I want the most sparkly diamonds in it

. Would the idealscope be something that would help me while I was looking at the settings? I''ve seen some information on the ideascope, but mostly just for choosing center stones, not for a pre-set semi-mount. Would it work for that? Also, they say the platinum takes on a "patina" I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of what that looks like.

Thanks a bunch!

The first pic was the Leo Ingwer engagement band and this is the matching wedding band. Just wondering if there was a way to find out the quality of the diamonds in these. The jeweler who had the Leo Ingwer catalog had no idea. Thanks!

buying from a reputable jeweler will help. Facets has many happy customer''s here on Pricescope and their stones are all well cut. Princess cuts stones however are not going to sparkle the same way rounds do.

for pictures of patina on plat. click here

you also might want to check out Precisionset.com they have very nice flushfitting settings.

Flushfitting--Does that mean when I go to upgrade my center stone to a large one it won''t fit, or how will that work? Thanks for your replies they have been VERY helpful. I didn''t realize there were so many more choices out there. I''ve been looking for this kind of setting for a few months!

Patina pictures very helpful, not what I imagined from website descriptions. I was worried at first, but after seeing the pictures, the patina is not at all something I would mind. I have a WG wedding set now that constantly turns yellow, can''t stand it!

flushfit means that the e-ring and wedding band will sit next to each other flush/no gap between the 2 rings.

Depending on the setting it may or may not be able to accomodate a larger head(the place where the stone sits) for a larger stone if it needs one. That''s something to be sure to discuss with the jeweler about the setting you are considering.

If I am shopping in a store and find a semi-mount ering and a wedding band that look like they will sit flush together (for example: if they both don''t taper) will that be a good indicator of what it will look like once it is mounted with the center stone? I plan on getting them tacked together as well, is that generally a good idea? Also I''ve seen the term melee mentioned a few times, what''s that?

I see a lot written about GoodoldGold, I also see they carry Leo Ingwer, have you heard anything about the quality diamonds they use in their settings? I imagine at least a few people have bought from that designer through goodoldgold. Thanks!

it''s totally up to you if you want to solder (tact) them together. My old wedding set was and I liked it at the time. My sister has channel set rounds that are half eternity and she soldered them to keep them lined up.

melee are very small round diamonds.
