Hi everyone,

my soon to be fiance and i have been shopping for a diamond for a few months now and we settled for this one. I have seen it under a loupe first-hand and it''s beautiful. It''s certified by GemScan and I have the SARIN report on it as well. I wanted to know if the stats are those of a diamond that''s really Ideal... and if this is really as great a diamond as we think it is for the price, which is $7000 CAD for the stone (best i have found so far).

Here are the stats:

Shape: Round brilliant Cut
Measurements: 6.54 x 6.51 4.03mm
Weight: 1.05ct
Clarity: VS-2
Colour: G
Cut: Ideal
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: none
Diameter (mm): 6.53 (6.52-6.54)
Crown angle: 34.4
Crown height: 15.0%
Pavil Angle: 40.6
Pavil Depth: 42.6%
Culet: 1.3%
Table Size: 55.9%
Total Depth: 61.6%
Girdle Thick %: 1.4-2.2
remarks: Ideal cut, per standards of the American Gem Society (AGS)

Thanks everyone!!!

Numbers looks good. Which lab grades this? What is the report number? I ask because if AGS grades the stone, it will not be ideal cut because of the EX symm instead of Ideal.

Ditto. Which type of lab grading report does the diamond have? It looks super and extremely promising. There are excellent non AGS0 rated diamonds and this could be one of them, do you have an Idealscope or ASET image for this diamond please?

Thanks for the replies!!!

The lab grading report is by GemScan which is Canadian i think. I asked for the Sarin Report on it as well, which is how I got all the angles, percentages etc... only problem is i don''t know what the numbers should be in order for it to be a good diamond.... I was a bit scared cuz its GemScan and not GIA or AGS which I know more of... but I wasd told if i got a SARIN report it would give me the missing info which would allow me to compare it to AGS standards etc.... I went to a good dealer in the jewlery disctrict in Montreal, it is a reputable place... I am just really afraid of being ripped off...and be told im getting an ideal cut diamond when it''s not...

I don''t have an Idealscope image, and i dont even know what that is! thanks so much for the help!!!

An Idealscope is a tool that helps to evaluate how well a diamond reflects light. Here is a page with good explanation

As stone cold and Lorelei said, the numbers on the diamond look good--having a Sarin is a plus. Without images, we can't really tell any more about the stone, but it has excellent potential.

I think the price is OK for a brick and mortar store, IF it is really the equivalent of a GIA or AGS certified G VS2. Not being familiar with GemScan, I don't know how strict they are on grading. If one of the two major labs would grade it as a H SI1, then the price is probably a little high.

Not sure how good gemscan is for color and clarity. Maybe take it to an independent appraiser in town?

There is one listed in Burlington, VT, he does not use cut grade tools but at least he will be able to verify the color and clarity grades. Not sure how to look for one in Montreal.

You can buy an Idealscope for $25 here.http://www.ideal-scope.com/cart_order.asp

Yes Gemscan is Canadian I believe, what I would do is to get an independant appraisal to check the diamond out, then if it does check out to be accurate for colour and clarity then well and good.

I think i will get an independant appraisal. Is it too late now that we already put a 300$ deposit on the diamond? Should we have had it appriased before the deposit?

actually, how does one go about getting an independant appraisal? does my jeweler send it to an appraiser himself? do i bring it directly ? am i allowed to bring it if i havent paid for it all yet? anyone know a good appraiser in montreal?? thank you!!!

You can ask the vendor if they will work with you to have the diamond sent to an appraiser, it could be you would need to pay for it first then specify the right to return if you weren''t happy for any reason to include the result of an appraisal. Try a Google search to find an independant appraiser in your area or some of the Canadian PSers might know of one.

I set up an appointment for the independant appraisal.

Is there a checklist of things I need to ask the appraiser to include in their report to me?
Is there anything I need to know about how to proceed with the jeweler if the diamond ends up being appriased at lesser quality than what is written in the GEMSCAN report?

Thank you!!

This article should help you with that,

https://www.pricescope.com/appraiser.asp

Also get it in writing that you can return the diamond during an agreed return window should it not appraise as sold or any aspect of the diamond is not to your satisfaction.

Thanks for the advice,

I got it appraised and it''s actually an H, as opposed to G. So I am going back to the negotiating table to get a similar diamond that''s a G for the same original price. SO much for GemScan...
