I just stumbled upon this forum when searching for loose diamonds for my wedding ring, searching in St Thomas.... my fiance is from there, has told me the diamonds are much cheaper there. We don''t have a lot of money, and we want something special, and plus my ring size is a 2 so... so... so hard to find something I like with THAT problem.

My question is.... is it really going to be worth our time or effor to purchase stones that we wont even see until they arrive at my doorstep?

I searched websites over and over and over, but I dont understand one word of the codes for clarity or what not. I am just looking for something simple, not too big I dont want to fall over LOL and reasonably priced.

Any suggestions? comments? HELP!!! LOL

Yikes...as someone who just recently had a very bad experience buying a diamond ring in St. Thomas, I''d strongly advise doing your homework. I bought a ring that back home appraised for 3 colors and clarity levels below, significantly below what was claimed.

I got lucky, found PS, did LOTS of reading and homework and in the end was fortunate enough to have RockDoc (a contributer here who is an appraiser specializing in fraud) save me. It took four months and dozens and dozens of phone calls to get this resolved- I was very lucky to get my money back but I almost got severely ripped off. It was an EXTREMELY stressful experience.

I''m in the process of starting over, yes, the price will be more this time but there is no comparison in terms of quality....spend time here reading, you''lll learn so much & will be able to make an informed purchase...I bought my ring in St. Thomas without any diamond knowledge at all, that was my problem.

in summary the answer to your question: "My question is.... is it really going to be worth our time or effor to purchase stones that we wont even see until they arrive at my doorstep?" NOT IN MY OPINION. And if you do, have them sent to an independent appraiser first, before you pay, to have them checked out.

be careful!

If you purchase from a reputable online vendor it is. (This does not mean one in St.Tomas).

HOnestly, if you don''t even have the clarity and color information down yet, stick around here and do lots of reading. Begin at the top of this page under Knowledge. Diamonds are not a purchase that you want to make as an uneducated consumer.

What type of ring do you have in mind? Go under Show me the Ring and then into the Eye Candy thread. You will see hundreds of pictures to get you started.

Oh, and welcome to PS

You have a size 2 finger?!! Wow! I am so jealous!! :)

I absolutely agree that the St. Thomas idea is a fallacy. After reading on this forum for 5 months, I wouldn't buy a diamond from anyone other than some of these vendors. Some of the best with high quality diamonds at fair prices are Good Old Gold, WhiteFlash, Winfield's, James Allen, etc.

The reason that you can buy from them without seeing the diamond is that you can see pictures and the certificate, you are buying the very top quality AGS0 or GIA Excellent cut, and they all have from a 10-30 day return policy, no hassle.

I agree that I''d stay away from diamonds in St. Thomas. there are many wonderful vendors her on Pricescope. If you know you budget pricescopers will be more than happy to help you find something in your pricerange. also, many vendors offer very good trade-up policies so you can get something you can afford now and trade it down the line when the budget is bigger. You do have tiny hands. I think there are a couple of size 2 1/2''s around here, but not sure a 2. Don''t worry though, there''s a perfect setting for you and with such a tiny finger diamonds will look HUGE on you.

I am so glad I found this website. I haven''t had a whole lot of time to explore yet, but everyone, so far, has been very helpful. Well, I am off to do a lil bit of erading, thanks a million.

It''s going to take me awhile to read through things on here.... I am trying to locate a spot that tells me where the best place is to go buy loose diamonds??

You can go above and click on Resources, then Diamond vendors. There are many reports of buying experiences with various vendors on this forum.
