Hi guys, i''m just starting the search for an engagement ring...so far in my internet searches, i came up with few vendors... whiteflash, GOG, and bluenile.... i''m thinking about a round diamond maybe around 0.7-0.85 in size, set in a platinum band... and i have these following questions...

#1, With a platinum band, could i drop to color G / H and still have the color not to be noticeable ?

#2, diamonds of this size range (0.7-0.85), i''m thinking about getting a VVS1-VVS2.... or could i get as low as VS1 ?

#3, the reason trying to determine the lower limits of color/clarity is so i can get the H&A ideal cut from whiteflash (AGS 0 ?) (or blue nile signature (AGS 0?), as they call it)....is it worth it ? or could i instead save some $$ and just get the ideal cut from blue nile (AGS 1 ?)

thanks for any advice & suggestions !!

Color look at this video to see you and your mate's tolerance. http://vimeo.com/3288695

Regarding clarity, as long as it is eye-clean, even an SI1/2 will not be visually different from an IF/VVS. So I would go down to SI level with trusted vendors that has the stone in their inventories and not drop-shippers like BN.

H&A are a measure of optical symmetry, not physical symm as defined by the labs, and not a measure of optical performance. A stone with optical symm do necessary have a H&A pattern and good optical performance, and vice versa. So depends on what you want. James Allen is a good site to find stones with good optics but not H&A as they supply idealscope image of stone when requested, to determine optical performance, but not H&A image, which is required for a true H&A stone. For true optical performing H&A stone, go with GOG, WF or HPD stones as they will have all the information available.

Hi guys, i'm just starting the search for an engagement ring...so far in my internet searches, i came up with few vendors... whiteflash, GOG, and bluenile.... i'm thinking about a round diamond maybe around 0.7-0.85 in size, set in a platinum band... and i have these following questions...

#1, With a platinum band, could i drop to color G / H and still have the color not to be noticeable ? Yes, reliably graded G or H colour ( GIA or AGS) will still be extremely white, if you are unsure then see if you can check some out in person such as AGS0 Peerless brand from Jareds or Hearts on Fire if there is a dealer near you, to see what your preferences actually are. This is really better than relying on photos on a computer screen, bear in mind that monitors can vary in depicting colour in diamonds or lack of and colour perception varies so it would be well worth looking in person if you can.

#2, diamonds of this size range (0.7-0.85), i'm thinking about getting a VVS1-VVS2.... or could i get as low as VS1 ? You could even consider SI1 or SI2 if you are working with a trusted vendor who can inspect the diamond and let you know if it matches your expectations for ' eyecleanliness.' So I would add these grades to your search if you wish. Unless you want very high clarity of VVS then VS should definitely be eyeclean in the size you are considering and some SI could well be.

#3, the reason trying to determine the lower limits of color/clarity is so i can get the H&A ideal cut from whiteflash (AGS 0 ?) (or blue nile signature (AGS 0?), as they call it)....is it worth it ? or could i instead save some $$ and just get the ideal cut from blue nile (AGS 1 ?) You can buy from BN certainly but they don't supply the info needed such as ASET or Idealscope images to help evaluate each diamond, below are some other trusted vendors for you to look at. If you want a branded h&a diamond then I will list some vendors below who sell these but it depends on what you want. If you aren't bothered about having a ' true' h&a diamond then maybe just a well cut diamond will do the job such as non branded h&a AGS0 or GIA Excellent. Also some of these diamonds may show a strong arrow pattern if the optical symmetry is excellent which many consider a bonus. However in order to evaluate optical symmetry, images such as ASET or Idealscope are essential.

Here is a link which explains about ASET and Idealscope and their uses.

it is but as long as it is within thin to slightly thick range, should be fine.
