Hi,

I am new to the board. I purchased a 1.24 marquise diamond at the IG&J show in Houston on April 15. It is a VS2, H in color. The place I had it appraised concured with what the EGL cert said. I forgot to ask about the measurements.

Would someone be willing to help me figure out these measurements? Is this a fair cut?

I read in Fred Cuellar book total depth should be in the 56% to 61% range.

My length to width ratio is 1.79.

Weight: 1.24
Shape: Marquise
Color: H
Clarity: VS2
Measurements: 9.77 x 5.44 x 3.78 mm (don''t know what 3.78mm means)
Depth: 69.5
Table: 60.3
Crown: 15.4
Pavilion: 47.8
Girdle: Very thin to SL. Thick
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluor: None
Culet: None

EGL number is lasered on diamond.

Thank you for your help.

I posted what I could. Gemappraisers.com (where the attached chart is from) seems to be down at the moment and I couldn''t run the numbers through the DIY grading but by hand you can see above. The stone will clearly face up small for its weight since the depth value is pretty high (that''s what your 3.xx mm measurement is). Other than that, it clearly spoke to you enough to purchase it on the spot. The paper alone won''t tell the whole story, especially for a fancy shape like marquise. If you loved it enough to want it, then enjoy it!!!

How does the diamond appear? Is it bright and sparkly? Is there any visible bow tie? Being in Houston, I would have HAD to go to Whiteflash

The diamond is deep, making it look smaller than it really is. I would have to know where the very thin area of the girdle is. If it is at the tips, that is a big no-no, as it puts your diamond in danger of chipping.

Yes, it has a bow-tie. It is not black but looks like glass.

Unfortunately I did not know about Whiteflash until after I purchased the diamond. Now I really have buyer's regret?

I paid $4550.00 for it and that included a 18K cath. setting. The GIA appraiser said I didn't pay to much though.

My next diamond purchase I will be more the wiser.

Well, if it is beautiful (and it could be, numbers are not everything when it comes to marquises) and if you love it, that is all that matters. Your price seems to be fair, considering it is EGL.
