Hi, I am new here and my boyfriend asked me which of the 4c''s was important to me (after carat size). So I wanted to ask you all which was more important to you: color, cut or clarity.
Moonla, I think it will be very important for both you and your BF to truly understand the implications of cut before he goes out to buy your stone. Please read and steer him to the tutorials under the "Knowledge" drop-down menu above.
All of the 4 C''s are important. You need to set some parameters on all of them. But stick with ideal or excellent for the cut and then work out the other three within your budget!
1. cut
2. colour
3. carat
4. clarity (well, MUST be eye clean, so THAT ranks above carat, but SI1 is fine).
When it comes down to it, the person your diamond most has to impress is YOU. YOU need to take as much pleasure from it as possible, and that means it has to look as BEAUTIFUL as possible. The most important thing for beauty BY FAR is an excellent cut, followed by colour. Whether you like it warm or icy is up to you! I like my ice icey (D or E), but there are plenty of GORGEOUS warm (I-Kish) diamonds to be had too. That''s a matter of taste.
Clarity only matters at the point where you can actually see the inclusions, unless you have a spiritual or cultural attachment to the idea of purity. Personally, I actually like that my diamond has a (completely invisible to the naked eye) flaw because it symbolizes how even flawed things (like me and FI!) can be beautiful.
I have done my research and finally chose a diamond last week that I will be buying. In all of my research and looking at diamonds, I''ve learned there needs to be a healthy balance between the 4 c''s, and additional things that go along with them.
For instance, I decided that I was comfortable with an F to an H in Color. I ended up going with a G.
For Cut, I was considering only Very Good, or Excellent and luckily the stone I chose is Excellent.
There was also clarity, which is all a personal preference. I personally couldn''t live with black dots in my diamond so I went with a diamond that had a minor white imperfection instead. I was considering SI1''s but only if they were at the higher end of the SI1 scale. My jeweler did a great job at only finding me stones that were VS2''s to SI1''s and we found a stone that I could live with in the SI1 range.
Then there is Carat...this was the hard part. Especially if you are comparing multiple diamonds and you can possibly afford to splurge and go a little bigger with your budget. I started out saying I wanted anything over 1ct since my GF has hinted that is what she wants. After shopping up to 1.30ct''s just for comparison, I ended up going with a 1.25ct. So my GF will be happy to see she is getting more and I am happy I was able to find a diamond that still fell in my budget with all great specs.
Seems like everyone has a preference when it comes to diamonds, and EVERY DIAMOND IS UNIQUE IN ITS OWN WAY. So go shopping, find stones that fit your criteria, and then fall in love with one and that is your winner
Price Scope helped me understand everything and I thank everyone for their feedback!
