I have just started looking for engagement rings. I recieved a list of things that my girlfriend says she wants. She admits not knowing everything, so some may be bad info. I know nohing about the topic, but want to learn before buying. Here is what I got: She wants a round brilliant shaped, ~.75 carat, vvs2 or better, F or better diamond, and no flourescence. I have no idea about what to worry about with cut. I do hope to spend between 3000 and 4000 on this ordeal due to huge med school debts, and still being in school. Is this realistic, what should I look out for, and other advise? Thanks.

Also she wants a yellow gold ring, does that matter for the type of diamond to get?

I was being stupid, sorry for wasting all who read this' time.

I looked at some articles about the cut, went to all the work of typing in the specs that I had to find price info, and read some other posts for the other stuff. Maybe I will have a better question later.

I trully hope this is not going to be an ordeal! Would it be possible to go diamond shopping with your girl? Few people would insist on F-VVS once they fail to see 'color' or inclusions in a G/VS or so. If she can pick the grades up, congratulations - I can't. As far as I expect, while she may still stick with a higer color (despite the size of the stone), there is NO way she will see any inclusions in a VS stone. Just for the sake of reason, you may explain that all diamonds above SI1 are always eye clean, with inclusions' size comparable favorably with dust grains!

Some want high-white, flawless diamonds for the symbiolic value of these grades, but aside this, there is little to be said in favor of such hunt. Of course... there is the advertising and the page-long buyin guide on most websites which calls D-F color grades 'colorless' etc... Also, it may well be the case that your girl has never heard of what makes a diamonds' cut desirable. If she sent you a list of requirements, maybe you could show her Pricescope? There are quite a few posts here advocating more mundane color and clarity grades and top cut - for a change.

These being said, you should be able to find what you are looking for.

Here's one 'one the specs': WWW

and a piece I would consider a better buy, and most likely indistiguishable in terms of color and clarity from the first: WWW

You should be able to get either stone in a simple setting from the same source, I supose. There are other sellers and stones, of course - these are quick examples...

Thanks for your help. I should remember that sarcasm doesn't work as well on message boards for the ordeal thing. I guess now it is just me checking them out in a store to see what differences may or may not be seen. Although she says she just wants it to sparkle all nice like, something tells me that she wants a VS or better stone for some reason, same as the high color. I will look harder at the cut stuff, it seems that that contributes more, thanks. I am trying not to take her along because she already knows or can guess so much about when I will ask her.
