Ok, so I'm no kid (wish I was) but I've been around the block a time or two. Anyway, I'm in the market for an "eye clean" diamond... now, I know this is an endless debate about what is eye clean. However, this ring (a 1.2, G, SI1) had a GIA cert which matched the measurements etc.

But, I don't want to get burned so I got my 13MP cam out and took a shot. Can you at least tell me under this crazy megapixel ratio thing if this is something to research further? My girfriend love the ring in the sun light and fluorescent but wanted some feedback.

You need to move this to Rockytalk. What is your budget? Colour and size preferences? We will all make other suggestions so you can see the difference between this stone and what something that is going to be a top cut fireball will look like or what something that is a well cut nice priced stone will look like if it is something that is preloved or Antique.

And no it doesn't look like it is particularly clean or a great cut (which gives the stone the fire and sparkle) to me.

I have a really hard time believing that's a Si1 graded by GIA. Does the clarity plot match? Is the surface of the stone really dirty?

And just to answer your question - no, it doesn't look like a good stone - both in cut and clarity. I'd throw this one back.

To be honest, no that stone does not look good at all. I would return it and find something else.

From this picture I would agree that it doesn't look good. However, it is magnified and I suspect a bit dirty from fingerprints and such.

Can you post the GIA cert so we can see the numbers?

I think the entire ring must be quite grimy/heavily coated with dust - even the shank in the posted pic shows as laden with dust or dirt.

OP - if you post the GIA certificate specs (including the date of the Cert if possible), or even just the GIA cert number, people can use that info to help you evaluate the stone.

eta: agree this thread belongs in the Rocky Talky forum - OP, if you hit the "report concern" button, you can ask the moderators to move this thread over to the RT forum - you'll get more responses there too I'm certain.

Are you sure that is a diamond?... :silenced: check the inscriptions on the girdle to be sure it matches the GIA lab report #s.

No. NO. No. Return it.

I'm no expert, but I just don't see any way that would be a GIA G/SI1... :| It has obvious tint and is so included that it looks like frozen spit. The cut doesn't look good either. If you've already purchased, get your money back. If you post your budget, PS members can help you find an amazing diamond! :))

If that diamond is clean, there is absolutely no way it is GIA SI1.

OP doesn't want to get burned, but his girlfriend loves the ring, so the thing to do may be to negotiate a fair price based on the actual quality of the stone. What is the current asking price for the ring?

Let me play devil's advocate:

Given that they "love" the light performance IRL, if they're set on that diamond size, and if OP doesn't want to spend more than, say, $5k (I'm making some assumptions here for sake of argument, until we hear back from OP), then maybe this ring would be a viable option for this couple after all?

Given how dirty the band is in that pic I'm confident the diamond is absolutely filthy.

Clean it (leave it soaking in hot water for a couple of days - keep replacing the hot water) and let's try this again.

ETA: I just looked at that pic again - OMG, is it perched on a knife blade!? Please, please keep rings and knives far, far away from each other!! You'll scratch the shank and nick the blade.

HI:

Is it an appraisal from a GIA gemologist or from the lab? If the latter can you provide the link to the GIA cert?

cheers--Sharon

You say you're still in the market, that means you haven't bought that thing yet. Run, Forrest, RUN!

I'm no expert but what is that!!!!

No one will hurt you here. But they will tell you their honest, well educated and unbiased opinions. The crowd says 'NO!". Listen to their warnings and follow the trail... Good luck!

Thank you all so very much for your time and energy. I have a good window of time before I spend the cash and am elated that I found what feels like a community that has my best interest at heart (no pun intended :o). I took the picture w/ a camera phone and the pic looks nothing like the actual diamond (lighting issues, cleanliness... basically, you were all correct). So, I'm going to borrow my friends Olympus Pen (and him lol) and take a good picture and upload it. Thank you for your time, patience and energy... it's been actually quite refreshing. More soon! Thank you thank you!

Yes! Please clean and repost! :appl:

Someone said on here once something like....

Don't bother buying a well cut diamond if you are not going to keep it clean! LOL

and welcome to Pricescope! I have learned so much from this site, there are many very knowledgeable people on here! (not me)

Even if you go back and get much better pics it would still be worthwhile outlining how much you intend to potentially spend on that particular rock and everyone will find you other stones with outstanding cuts for hopefully comparable prices that way you can compare what is available.

+1
Once you post your budget, PS members can "go to work" and find you a great stone! :))
