Question, AFter a few rounds in the diamond trade, I stumbled upon a odstock circa 1970''s cartier platinum. hallmarks and all. the kicker is the documentation from way back in the day. My question is, any idea how to find out its worth? Brand new never used collecting dust 30 years. I have the ref # any ideas where to start?

Cartier, i heard they are interested to purchase some of their old designs, that might aim you to the real price....

thanks, I doubt appriasers atelast ones i can find can give an accurate answer since its so old any other ideas?

Crayola

Welcome to the forum

I have never used him myself, I am in the United Kingdom, however I believe that Richard Sherwood who replied to your post is a very experienced appraiser and has helped many people here on the forum and in real life. Have a look at some of his previous posts to see how accomplished he is in his speciality.

I think if he said that you should seek out an appraiser, that would be good advice. He is not the type to tout for business on here (infact that is against forum rules) and would not steer you in a wrong direction.

they are trained to evaluate pieces that are much older than 1970, take it to and appraiser and they will be able to tell you.

any recomendations>? on appraisers?

Where are you located?

Heh heh heh... Thanks for the recommendations guys.

Crayola, DiaGem has a good idea about going straight to the source. But then again, you wouldn''t know if you were getting a fair offer if you didn''t have any comparables to go by. This is where an appraiser comes in handy. He''s working for you, so he gives you an impartial, unbiased opinion as to the value. A guide to go by, so you know if the offers you receive are reasonable or rip-offs.

If you want to know the "fast cash" value (usually less than wholesale) you could get bids from three knowledgeable estate dealers, with possibly Cartier''s being one. If they all are in fairly close agreement then you will know the "quick dollar" value of the ring.

If you have more time to work with it, and are smart about selling it, you can usually realize more money by working through other market levels with some patience.

Good documentation is key to getting top dollar though, especially with fine pieces.

Cartier Vintage watch " New ".

Do you have a photo of the watch? Papers/ original box etc? Style is very imprtant, some are desireable and some aren''t, which causes vast differences in the sales prices acheived.

If you are near a Cartier store, might not be a bad idea, to have it serviced first. I wouldn''t just let any watchmaker work on it.

If it''s been sitting in the box without being run there is a strong chance that the lubrication inside the watch has dried up.

Selling it with a fresh service receipt would be helpful, and better to have it valued after the servicing is done.

Rockdoc

RockDoc is another reputable appraiser who along with Richard Sherwood has also been posting on these forums for years.

You would be safe with either one.

It would help to know where you are - then people can give you more focused recs. Also try the appraisers link under the resources button - you can find an appraiser in your area.

Hi Crayola. Thanks for the heads up on my site being down. I was not aware of it. I''ll have my webmaster check it in the morning.

I''ve been out of town a couple days, and will send you a sample CDA (Comprehensive Diamond Analysis) report so you can see what it contains. Sorry for the delay.

Blue,

Appraising is not the same thing as gemology. Researching and reporting on how a particular item will be expected to perform in a particular marketplace is exactly what appraisers are supposed to be doing but I realize that an awful lot of jewelry appraisers don’t seem to be prepared to do this basic task. That’s why Richard gave the qualifier of an ‘experienced’ appraiser. I would add to that the suggestion that you should seek out a ‘qualified’ appraiser. You would be doing well to work with either Richard or Rockdoc who have posted above.

Age is not, in and of itself, a value characteristic. The marketplaces for vintage watches are driven by collectors interested in particular models, manufacturers and design elements. Market selection is critical. When you speak with your appraiser, make sure both you and they understand what marketplace you are asking about. The price that Cartier would theoretically be charging for the watch is not the same as the price you can expect to realize if you sell it on ebay or that a more mundane jeweler would be asking for it (additional note: asking price and selling price are often quite different in many stores).
