new to it all...need help

I am recently engaged and new to the whole ring thing so I have a few stupid questions like:
1. Do you get a man's wedding band appraised if it has no diamonds and should we insure it like we did with my engagement ring?

2. Is all 14Kt white gold created equally. He found the band he wanted at a store that has neither a poor nor great reputation. It is a simple ?comfort fit" band with a "satin finish." I have seen a lot of back and forth on here about 14kt gold vs other options. Price wise we have to go with 14kt, but do you shop gold like you shop a diamond? Meaning, do you go to only a reputable place for a simple gold band so you know they are not ripping you off. Is there any such thing as ripping you off with a less quality 14kt gold? Does that even make sense?

No such thing as stupid questions. I ask a few every now and again myself. However, I am always happier knowing the answers I want than not.

1. No, you do not need to get it appraised. If you can''t afford to buy it again if it''s lost, then yes. Use your sales receipt to add it to the policy.

2. No, it''s not all created equally. Some white gold is mixed with palladium requiring no rhodium plating to remain white and it does not irritate like nickel white gold can. I would only ever shop at a reputable place for jewelry. I''m sure if there''s a way to scam you, someone will try, but I don''t think you''ll have that problem on a simple white gold band. It''s really more effort than it''s worth to try to take you for a ride and steal money from you and it''s not worth the loss of reputation or threat of a jail sentence. Just pick a nice, family owned place that you want to establish a relationship with for future inspections and cleanings and stuff like that. You''ll be fine.

Thanks Shay- this place is 2nd generation family owned been around 25years in NYC''s diamond district. I am a little skeptical sometimes of vendors in the diamond district as there is always the issue of shady dealers. However, this location was very nice looking, professional service and nobody outside trying to get you to come in.The ring we were looking at is 14kt WG w/rhodium plating.
