Hi All,

I'm glad I found this website and I have been sitting here looking through achieves of information for the past couple days. I purchased an engagement ring for my fiancee last week at Shane Co. It was the first place I visited, and I didn't not shopped around, and don't even have a clue about diamonds! ( dumb mistake, i know..) But now I've found this site and have become a bit more informative!

I didn't expect to buy a ring that day, but somehow ended up with one. As I have read these forums, I may have overpaid for the one I purchased, but I would like to see what you guys think.

I purchased a "Shane Classic," had no clue what that meant until I searched it up after I came home.

Diamond specs: GIA Cert

Shape: round brilliant
Dem: 5.21-5.23x3.18
carat: .52
color: F
clarity: VS1
Cut: EX
PO: EX
SYM: EX
FL: None
cutlet: none
table size: 56%
depth: 60.9%
girdle: thin-med, faceted

there is a spot of cloud and needle shown in the report.

I purchased it for $2600 (for diamond alone), and Im always obsessing over getting the right thing for the right value.

The ring will be ready in a few days, but I want to see what you guys think. I'll post pictures after I pick it up!
I will be proposing at the end of the month, so I still have a little time to decide.

Thanks!

Ed

Are you within a return period or not? And also, do you know the crown and pavilion angles from the GIA report? Is it a hearts and arrows stone?

You can certainly get a similar (or potentially better, depending) diamond for less money...so that is why I asked if you were within your return period or not. Also Shane Co. doesn't usually have the best reputation around here.

For comparison here is a hearts and arrows stone, same specs, from WF for a few hundred less (and there is a small further discount if you pay by bankwire):

Thanks for the quick response! I am within the return period since I purchased it several days ago.

The crown angle is 34.0
Pavilion angle is 41.2
I don''t know if it''s a heart and arrow stone or not, but I''m thinking no.

Is a heart and arrow stone something of greater value and beauty? I''m not too familiar with that term.

Thanks again!

So based on those specs it scores outside the AGS range for the best cut stones. So it's really not a fabulously great cut, which is what will give it major sparkle. Personally, I would return it and get the whiteflash stone I mentioned above. Save yourself the money AND get a nicer diamond in the process. Seems like a no brainer to me!

And yes, Hearts and Arrows stones are of greater value certainly. And an ideal stone, whether H&A or not, will return more light and sparkle more. H&A stones are like what Hearts on Fire stones are...but without the pricey markup!

Agreed with neat. You overpaid by quite a bit.
