You know how sometimes you come across those once in a lifetime things, the ones that are almost perfect, and you think, nothing like this will ever come around again, so you jump on it, even when it isn't quite right?

Happily, I resisted. I mean, it was literally 99% perfect. It had the amazing workmanship I wanted. It was octagonal. Platinum.

But a little pave here, a little too high there ... not quite. Not to mention that my husband got unexpectedly sentimental over my original setting .... it was a moot point.

A year later, I found a setting that has ALL of the pluses, NONE of the minuses.

Amazing workmanship. Gallery built like fairies were modeling a cathedral. Die-struck.

Hit send early on my phone, but the points stand. I cannot for the like of me figure if I should reset my original engagement ring from its beautiful but impractical (re: catches on everything with a toddler) setting, into this new work of art, or set a random stone into this one and wait for a BIG anniversary for a new stone for the fancy setting. Guys? Your thoughts? A few pics of the amazing workmanship to follow ....

Hmm. Well, the line "gallery built like fairies were modeling a cathedral" has convinced me that you really love this setting! :D I don't know - I'm delving into enabler territory here but I think you should go for it! Anxiously awaiting pics. How is Mr. Circe feeling about it?

Your prosaic description sure sounds like you want to go for it.... ;))

Any pics of this beauty? I'm excited to view this temptress!!!!

My first instinct is to reset your ER into your dream setting. Enjoy it now. It was meant to be.

Eagerly awaiting pics! Can you post a pic of your ering as well?

Re: resetting... if you reeaaaallly want to but your husband is not feeling it, maybe reset right now, say that it's for the sake of comfort while you have a toddler on your hands, but keep the original setting as well. Over time, he'll probably get used to it. Or, eventually you can find a new stone, and switch things around.

Circe it sounds like you really want it. I would get it and then work n DH whether to reset if as your ER or use it as a RHR until he agrees. Can't wait to see it.

Argh - technology 1, Circe 0. I thought the post with the pics had gone through last night! Let me rectify that omission now ... just two, 'cause I have to run, more tonight.

If, um, any of our resident PhotoShop genuises wanted to pop a stone in there to see how it might look ... I would give you cupcakes and fairy dust .... (mine is bigger than the current seat - I'm thinking the inner ring would go, and the second one would be revamped a little).

And, also, should have said - the husband is A-O-K with whatever I want to do. It just took him a little while to think.

More pics tonight, but in the meantime, look at those little Gothic arches!

I can see why you love it! It's breathtakinging gorgeous...delicate, but substantial at the same time. I'm going with our resident enabler on this one...GO FOR IT!

If your hubby is okay with it, do it! What is holding you back?

Ok, bear with me, I'm old and have trouble following sometimes...Do you mean you would buy this setting and put another stone in it (not sure what you mean by random stone - a colored one?) And when you talk about getting a new stone, I'm assuming you mean an upgrade to a larger stone, in which case it wouldn't fit in this setting anyway. (unless you're referring to a different setting). So sorry, I'm easily confused and not sure what the dilemma is!

At any rate, I love this setting and am thinking you should just go ahead and do a reset of your current ering stone- You clearly really love it!

I really like the setting, and would it be for the stone where the setting is currently trying to be fixed? (Maybe it's a sign????) Not trying to enable (too much) but it IS sort of fortuitous if so! ;)

FWIW- I just freed my stone from the old fishtail (that I didn't want to mess trying to have raised) and was looking for something like that kind of setting for it (no go) but it looks SO much better now! (Pictures coming SOOON!!!) Ok- now I really AM enabling. Have you looked at your stone loose since the setting is not repaired yet? Maybe that could guide you to whether it should be reset. ???

Bastetcat -- looking forward to pics of your reset!!

Circe -- I love this kind of setting. I actually wanted to bid on one once, also thinking that maybe the inner ring could be removed, and the head altered a bit to fit a bigger stone. You should totally do it! So I can watch and learn :rodent:

circe, how beautiful!!! :))

I would def. get it. if you are worried about it being to tall for constant wear with a small child, and your hubbi is too sentimental at the moment towards your original setting, you might think about this option. get this ring and set a colored stone in it, then wear it as a RHR for a while when it does not disturb too much with your son (or daugther). I think that your husband will grow into liking it, if he sees you love it too.
When the child is grown enough, if you still want to, you could switch stones and pop your diamond in the new setting.

That is not a tough call at all!

Reset the 1.5 into that one and size it for a RHR. Then you can wear it all the time and it will compliment your anniversary upgrade perfectly. I love that mount and say it for sale. The low stance is great.

Oh ok, I'm slow but I think I've got it - you're thinking you'd keep you ering intact, use this setting for a colored stone, and down the road buy a new diamond for this setting. I guess it comes down to how important it is for you to preserve your original ering...that's something only you can decide. I feel kind of funny telling you what to do in that regard! But I think it's perfectly fine to put your ering diamond into this setting - it will still have great sentimental value.

Thank you, patient ladies - I think I was so excited last night that I didn't make quite as much sense as I thought. And then today was a friend's birthday, so I was in and out all day with no PS access. Aaaaaaah!

Bottom line - JuneBug got it exactly right in her last post. I already have the setting ... when I saw it, there was no way I was passing it up, I knew I could always set SOMETHING in it. It's just a question of what, and when.

My options are basically to either set a colored stone of some sort into it now to wear as a RHR, with the plan of someday acquiring the milky-blue-fluorescent diamond of my dreams to set into it, or to put my e-ring diamond into it NOW to make it more wearable, and either put it back if/when I find said MBF stone, or pop THAT stone into my original setting. Decisions, decisions!

It's ironic that now my husband is perfectly okay with whatever I want to do, and I'm vacillating - on the one hand, I adore my original engagement ring, it has huge sentimental value, and (my recent setting nightmare in mind), I'm loath to mess with a perfectly set stone. On the other hand, it seems like a huge waste to not be wearing a gorgeous stone because it's not 100% practical for my day-to-day life.

I seem to have inadvertently delayed the question, though: I was messing around at my workbench and I accidently prong-set my first stone. I had a white zircon around the right size lying around, I popped it into the setting, and it fit so well that the prongs practically arranged themselves. Soooooo ... now I figure I will wait to see if my anniversary ring has been saved - please, gods of jewelery, help a gal out - and go from there. BastetCat is right, though, that this is the perfect back-up to have on hand if the refurbishment goes south for a third time. KNOCK ON WOOD IT DOESN'T.

I'll decide by my anniversary in October. Until then, though ... :cheeky:

ETA: HOW much do I love the engraving on the side - kicky-feet-of-joy!!!

Such a beautiful setting. Nice find!

And congrats on your first prong setting!

I still kind of hope you'll eventually get the head modified for a bigger stone so I can follow along... but I'm in no rush :cheeky:

:read:

Heheh - thanks, GF! I most definitely will, one way or another. It really is just a question of whether it'll be to reset my ER or get a new stone. And this way I can wear it while I decide without pressure. I love this setting so much!
