Alot of you guys have been seeing my posts regarding various diamonds - and you all have provided so much help.

Seriously - thank you. I know I am a pain.

Whatever diamond I buy, I will absolutely get it appraised immediately.

So I found this diamond (in addition to the 2.17 SI2 and 2.06 SI1 I was debating between before). It is an amazing deal. Seriously. The stone is a 2.01 G SI2 Good Cut, VG polish, VG symmetry, no fluoro. I know what you are thinking - "good cut?!?" - but it is a really beautiful stone. I will try to get the GIA cert online tomorrow if I can for your review.

First, it is an SI2, but there are almost NO inclusions anywhere near the center except for one pinpoint in the center listed on the diagram in the certification (there also appears to be some feathering or pinpoints out near the edges - but it appears to be eyeclean). I think it could be an SI1 (but I could be dreaming)! There are no comments outside of "additional pinpoints are not shown."

What I can''t figure out is why the stone was only graded a "good" cut!

Here are the proportions (I think I stated these somewhere else when we were talking about the HCA):

Measurements: 7.86 - 7.94 x 4.97
Table: 60%
Depth: 62.9%
Crown Angle: 36
Crown height: 14.5%
Pavilion Angle: 40.4
Pavilion: 42.5%
Girdle: Thick to very thick (faceted)
No Cutlet.

I am assuming that the reason it was given a good, instead of very good (or even Excellent - depth, table, polish and crown % are all within GIA excellent range - albeit barely), was because of the girdle being thick to very thick.

Is this a big deal? Will the girdle really affect light reflection and sparkle? Should I forget about the stone because of this or does it not affect performance as much as the other various factors?

I ran it on the HCA (we discussed this aspect before) and it scored an excellent 1.8 (way better than the other 2.06 ct excellent cut I was also looking at) and the HCA also said that this "good" cut stone was within the FIC range (which as you guys said before, is not as good as TIC even though some of you prefer FIC).

So what is the deal? Thank you in advance for your help! I will try to scan in the GIA cert tommorow (I have a copy here).

I''d consider it, but I''m not your average Pricescoper.

Also, you say:

I think you said before the place you''re shopping won''t take returns. Is that this place? Yes, get it appraised...but unless it''s only for valuation purposes...what difference does it make? Not that many appraisers say...take it back...anyway.

1. It's an FIC and the GIA/AGS doesn't like them.

2. That plus a huge table, makes for a potential fish eye effect.

It's probably one of those weird stones that the HCA says it's worth a look at but IRL it might be a dud. That's why it's used for elimination and not selection.

But if you saw it next to the other one and loved it, go for it. You and your FI are the ones that will have to love it, so if you do, who cares what we say?

ETA: It is also facing up VERY SMALL for a 2 carat stone...likely due to the girdle and not great cut. Most 2 caraters that are ideal cut are facing up around 8.15-8.15.

slight fish eye.
Will likely look good face up, 96% or so at best of an ideal cut.
tilt 5 degrees and compare it to an ideal cut.
spread is impacted by the girdle.

Wow - you guy''s weren''t kidding about the size.

I got down to looking at the actual dimensions of the stone, and it is much smaller than the other 2 carats I was looking at (I didn''t notice it because I didn''t see them together). I guess that very thick girdle keeps alot of weight!

Like others have said, fish eye effect may occur. I suggest finding a diamond with better proportions because remember that the proportions are what make or break the brilliance of the diamond. If its well cut than all the light will bounce around give you that sparkle that is so cherished. If however the proportions are not good, you may get stuck with a dull stone. No matter how big a stone is, nobody likes a dull stone.
