So now I''ve really done it to myself...

I have decided that I don''t love my oval, and I have not one but TWO jewelers out there looking for a different stone for me. BUT... I am pretty obsessed with that setting I saw at Dimend Scaasi the other day. The setting really lends itself to a squarer stone (like a cushion) and not I''m torn between a different oval in a similar setting to what I have now (with the pear side stones) or a cushion with the DS setting.

My worries about going to a cushion:

- I can''t even find good solid parameters to go off of in looking for a cushion. I''ve read everything from "use the 60/60 rule" to "there are no rules." Any advice here is MUCH appreciated, including insight into how much color shows in a cushion.

- Will I get tired of the DS setting in a short period of time? Even though it''s kinda vintage looking I feel like it''s a pretty "in right now" sort of design with the halo and all the pretty stuff going on on the sides, but I wonder if in a few years I won''t love it.

- I know that I would give up a significant amount of size going from an oval to the same ct. sized cushion. Will that make me crazy too or will the halo make up for it?

- How to explain this to my husband??? If I get another oval I can probably do it pretty "under the table" and he''ll never even notice. But if I come home with a cushion, well, even Mr.-I-Don''t-Pay-Attention-To-Anything-Jewelry-Related might pick up on that -- LOL!

Ohhhhhhh!!!

you d be surprised what you can get away with. stay with an oval...................what setting are you liking? picture?

Sorry about that -- should have posted a pic of the Dimend Scaasi setting. It''s *almost* like this one but it has graduated stones going up the sides and I would have him take off the "knobby" things where the diamonds stop and the plain shank begins.

holy cow--that is a really lovey setting. it is kind of like Beaudry without being overdone. Beaudry is impressive but wayyyyyy too much stuff going on for my taste. This is very similar to the T & co .......very very nice. I personally think that cushions are divine BUT I think an a slightly chubby oval would great in this setting. cushions are too irregular to fit into a setting............i think cushions need settings made to their shapes

Well, now that you mention it... I didn''t just *happen* to stop in Tiffany''s yesterday and try on the Legacy, which is similar to the DS setting, but I like the DS better.

Do you really think a fat oval would be OK in that setting? Mine is currently a 1.4 length/width ratio (which is about what I would shoot for in the replacement too since I find I like that proportion). I could even go a little fatter, depending on what the jeweler finds. And DS does make all the settings to exactly fit the stone so regardless, oval or cushion, it would have to be specifically made. (Afraid to think about how long that might take... )

yes i do a 1.4 or fatter would look really great and vintage. I think chubby/squarish stones always look more antique. I guess my fear is that cushions are sooo all over the place. So if you found an oval-ish cushion great but then why not an oval? if the cushion is that sort of ovalish shape but with blunted ends(like most of them) it wouldnt look so good in that setting (IMO)

Just wanted to say gorgous setting! But why get rid of the great surprise diamonds? They MAKE the setting, IMO.

Jaz - I like the surprise diamonds under the head, but the knobby things on the side felt weird on my fingers, both on the DS setting and on the Legacy. Maybe it would just be a matter of getting used to them. Your georgous marquise setting, by the way, is the one that has me lusting after the east-west oval setting on Pearlman''s site!

And WS, here''s my latest idea: Have a fat oval set in the setting and then if I get tired of it just switch it out to something simplier (like my current one) in a few years.

But the key here is finding the right stone...

Are you going to keep the original oval or try to get someone to resell it, or trade it up, or sell it yourself?

*whispers* cushion, cushion, cushion, cushion

You''re not liking something about that current oval, the setting that turned your head had other than an oval in it ... methinks you might be "over" ovals?

Firegoddess - the jeweler who sold it to me has an upgrade policy as long as you spend 30% more. I had a bit of a fit and he's looking for options that would only cost me a little more (i.e., going up one color grade or a little in size), so that might work out. The other person who's looking for me said he would take it in trade too.

And Deco... I originally started out looking for a cushion for my upgrade but when I saw a 3 ct cushion beside a 3 ct oval... well... the size whore in me took over. But maybe if I did the DS setting with the halo I wouldn't feel like I was missing out size wise. We'll see. My hope is that one of the two people looking comes up with a fabulous oval and makes the decision easy for me. And I have two more potential resources if these guys don't come up with anything I want.

well, I vote cushion buts that''s just because I want one

Why is this so hard??? If only I''d bought a good oval in the first place I would be happily getting on with my life right now...

(Sorry, just had to say that out loud.)

It is hard and most of us have been there. Have you tried on rings with cushions?

I agree with deco that the setting you fell in love with looks to me like it would look fab. with a cushion. Of course, there is the one halo I think deco posted with an e/w oval that''s pretty awesome too. I just think getting out and trying them on is the only thing that''s going to help you decide.

CUSHION CUSHION CUSHION!!!!!!

[and no, I''m not biased!

Also, I wanted to point out...my cushion only has 55% depth, but it was the most brilliant of all the ones my fiance looked at! And I''ve heard of several other shallow-ish cushions that look great too. The reason I''m saying this.....Ana checked out the stats for me and said my millimeter dimensions were approximately the same as a 1.5ct even though mine is only 1.08!

So don''t totally disregard cushions based only on size, since there ARE big looking cushions out there!!!! And since mine is more rectangular than square, it also has that optical illusion of appearing bigger to the eye too. Everyone always guesses it''s 1.5 or 2 cts, not a single person has thought it was only 1.08! So just keep looking!!!!!!

And I LOOOVE that setting, I don''t think you''d get sick of it at all!!!

DeeJay, I do love a good cushion, but like you, the size thing gets me. I adore the look of cushions but it's hard for me to get over that they look smaller than other shapes in the same carat weight. It's my only beef with asschers as well. If you find a cushion that sings to you, go for it, if the size is acceptable to you. I understand your torment completely!!!
