I don't have the best photo yet, but I thought I'd at least start. Think of it as the hospital photo of a new baby...no one looks
good in fluourescent light!
2.41, J, VS estimated. I am waiting to hear back from GIA........ :snore:
Thanks OEC lovers for the inspiring stones, knowledge, patient and/or nervewracking search and purchase stories. I'm going to guess this stone has a little fluor due to an outdoor pic I took. I literally spent minutes with it before I bought it so I feel almost like an ebay buyer, I hope it's as good as I thought it was... :errrr:

Congratulations :appl: Let's hope you don't get addicted like the rest of us do! :wink2:

Did you bring it to get appraised yet? Any other photos or is it with GIA? You can purchase a UV light pen off eBay for peanuts to play with its fluo.

Where did you buy it? Do you have any additional photos?

Still in the works with the appraisal, still in the works with GIA. It's from an online auction house that just happened to have a preview somewhat near me this time. I have been nerdily :read: reading about OECs and color and like everybody says, whatever the stated color is, it faces up whiter IRL. So J is good for me because I tend toward the color sensitive. I have seen some very beautiful warmer vanilla-flavored stones on here though. Plus, the rainbows just knock everything else out.

A fact new to me was that most of the diamonds at the turn of the century were coming out of Brazil and India at that time. Many of the diamonds were warmer. With the discovery of diamonds in Africa, it was found that those diamonds tended to be whiter/colorless more often. And please let your setting suggestions fly! I have a favorites folder, but I am still willing to be open to unexpected beautifulness...

Interesting info about the OEC's of the time - Brazil and India, eh?? Congratulations on your new diamond!

Exciting to find out what the diamond comes back as and it sure sounded like a whirlwind purchase = view/bid/buy/win! Just like eBay!! What are your setting ideas for this lovely new to you diamond?

There was a lovely milgrained octagonal frame around a 4.4 old european cut from a Dupuis auction that I loved. I think it too used to be a stick pin like another diamond I know around these parts. It was on Artfact and I hope it's okay to post if credit is given...I also like Leon Mege's r5020 with diamond shoulders. Somehow it just looks appropriate to me. A modern version of a common older style I think. In the same vein, I like Victor Canera's 6-prong solitaire which features an OEC. I would love an old setting. But if I can't find one then that severely cuts into new old diamond wearing excitement.

I will be interested to hear what GIA says! I thas been my experience that estate sellers usually exaggerate color by at least two grades.
Keep us posted with how everything progresses!!

Ooooh it looks like a beaut! Are those chunky arrows I see? I can't wait to see more pics! Congratulations! :appl:

Very exciting!!! Can't wait to see some shots of it out of the setting! :appl:

I am talking with an antique shop far away about one of three mountings they have for sale. I am trying to see if the one will
fit my stone which is still at GIA. I am going a bit crazy as it may be puuuuurrrrrfffect. It has many of the elements I wanted and reminds a bit of Dreamer's. I have been searching like a maniac and keep texas lady (what's her exact name? texas babe?) in mind too...she's doing the same thing. It held a sapphire but they have pictures with it and without it. I am hoping it is not too expensive, will fit, and is as good as I think it is. I'll work on posting a pic soon....

Congrats on your find. That OEC looks lovely. What is the diameter of the stone?

Thank you, it's 8.4 x 8.6. If twosanguinhearts changes her mind, I'll buy her setting! :cheeky: Now, can
you tell if the stone looks "domed" enough on top to be an OEC? It looks a little flatter to me from the
photos the more I look at it.

According to the appraiser, Rich Sherwood:

The machine which made it possible to brute a round diameter on a diamond was invented around 1900, so that can be used as a demarcation point in the dating of these old cut stones.

Old Mine Cut stones (cushion shaped) are typically circa 1840-1890.

Old European Cut stones (round, with small table, high crowns, and large to very large culets) are typically circa 1900-1920.

European Cuts (larger tables, lower crowns, medium to large culets) are typically circa 1920-1940.

Transitional Cuts (transitioning between the european cuts and the modern round brilliant cuts) are typically circa 1940-1950.

*************************************************************************************************************************************************************

So your stone is likely either European or transitional.

Thank you for that, I can never learn enough.

It's in!!!!! Wheeeeee!!! Who needs drugs?! I swear my blood is a 80/20 oxytocin/blood mix right now. This is sooooo fab. I texted DDH this photo and he said "You deserve it". I know there are many who deserve it as much and surely more than I, so please come along and drool with me while you bide your time. I waited 22 years. Now I know why you guys are all addicted now. I get it :Up_to_something: :cheeky: Also, I picked something much better now than what I started with-upgrades are always possible :saint:

And of of course, apologies for lack of manicure, I was organizing basement when I heard it was in and ran over...

That is one wonky girdle. IRL, can't tell a bit.

_913.jpg

I tried twice, oops it's sideways again. I guess I have to take a smaller picture of the report. Oh well, at least the info is on here.
Gahhhhhhhhhh! :appl: :appl: :appl: :appl: :appl:

I am loving the chunky snowflake facets. I just got to visit it today. I have to find a way to take a picture through the loupe
to show the pattern. It was beyond...thud....I love it :loopy:

Congratulations on your find! Actually I've read the reverse, diamonds we first discovered in India and later Brazil and these tended more towards colorless. Just when production in Brazil was starting to dry up diamonds were discovered in South Africa in 1860 and saved the whole industry, this made the stones cheaper and more plentiful than ever before but the mines tended to produce the warmer colors which became known as "cape yellows".

Oh for God's sake I can't believe I wrote that. Thank you for fixing that brain fart  Writing and thinking not coordinated that day I guess...

DUH-ROOLING over your diamond!!! WOW! it is beautiful! It must just sparkle like mad (and naturally the camera can never capture what you see! argh!)

That is gorgeous and I'm so happy that you are happy!!! Your DH sounds so sweet - 'you deserve it" --- awe -- big hug and kiss for your DH!!

Keep posting pics - want to see more and more of this gorgeous diamond!

Gorgeous stone!! And a GIA L VS2? Sweet!!! I can see why you're so thrilled - and I agree with Enerchi, "you deserve it" was such a nice thing for your dh to say, made me feel all mushy! Now you've got to get this baby set!

Congratulations on finding that gorgeous stone!!! Can't wait to see how you set it. Are you considering a SS setting?

[/attachment]

It's no octagonal or engraved halo. But it is really pretty. I drive myself half-nuts with the push/pull of beautiful competing settings. Filigree, platinum, vintage, fine repro, etc. I just thought to myself, you know, this is super pretty and vintage. Which, when it comes down to it, is what I truly wanted. Or just about anything Single Stone could make I'm sure. :naughty:

I think my jeweler can sell it to me for a song and they know a guy who works magic on settings and can turn this into a single stone mounting. Ideally I'd like to keep the same type of head just made for one main stone. I louped those side babies and there are maltese crosses under magnification. I think my main stone is that European cut/Transitional type. And with the potential to be in this earlier teens setting what more could I want, really? Let's see what the setting guy says, but this may just work. Now, a Singlestone band maybe........

And just another quick thing:
Is it worth polishing it up from Good to make it Very Good or Excellent or is that dangerous? I wouldn't want to do anything to damage it. I don't want to touch the girdle. Bruted is fine.

Surprised there is no fluorescence. I thought there might be some due to its white face up appearance. Symmetry is fair, yet cut is Good?

Its not worth polishing IMO, unless you plan to sell it. Don't worry about the cut grade, its irrelevant.

Its cool to see the numbers from the report! I am going to say based on your photos and those proportions -- notably the table size, crown angle, and lower halves -- that your diamond was cut in the 1940s or 1950s and is an example of an early modern brilliant! Very nice piece of history!

Interesting. Does any Trade have more information or opinions? :read:

I am having octagon setting issues. I think I would like something in the Nicole Richie vein. Not sure of the budget, I guess I need to see some examples.

Check my avatar. setting = $1590 customized, about $1390 with a round stone. 18K gold. from GOG - bev K.

Of course, I should have said,"...in the web diva," vein 8-)

Yours is certainly in my mental list of yeah, like that octagon outline for some reason. I need to post some favorites I guess. I'm not sure yet what that other vintage setting costs, probably not too bad. I'm terrified of changing my mind. I want a classic! And something unique! Crazy, I know. I would also like a band from Single Stone that has engraving on the sides. I do love my first world problem :halo:
