Hi, Black Jade here again. I just joined and as I wrote in my first post, I love my new ring which I got on Blue Nile after lurking on Pricescope for a few months. I''m interested now in diamond earrings and pendants too though and I don''t think I want to go with Blue Nile for either of these ''wishes''. I wanted to go with them for my ring, because my husband was anxious about the internet and I could show him how Forbes, the New York Times, etc. recommend them. Also, I knew that I didn''t want to upgrade my anniversary ring, it''s not my personality to do that. However I am totally fine with starting small for a present I buy for myself, like earrings or pendant and gradually get up to the size I would like. And Blue Nile doesn''t upgrade.

Also, Blue Nile doesn''t sell lower than J color and SI2 clarity and they don''t sell less than 18k gold. I wanted a very white diamond for my anniversary, in platinum, but I normally very much prefer yellow gold and I prefer warmer colors next to my face. I have been impressed by the look of a lot of diamonds on this site that are ''low'' colors, K, L, M and even lower. I want to go to a site that will let me do that, BUT also keep ideal cut or very good cut, and eye-clean. I actually like a little better than eye-clean for clarity. My Blue Nile diamond is an SI1, and that''s fine, because when I look through the loupe, I only see one tiny inclusion. But I wouldn''t like a diamond that looked good to the eye but had lots of nasty black spots all over it as soon as you put a loupe to it. I just don''t like knowing all that is there, to me it feels like knowing you have roaches in your kitchen even if they run away and hide when you turn on the light. Sorry don''t mean to offend.

Anyhow my questions are:
1)How much money should I reasonably expect to have to spend if I''m willing to buy a yellower (but well cut and reasonably clean) diamond? I should have $500-$600 to spend at the beginning of next year I''m thinking that I can get a small pendant with that, but not earrings. It seems that earrings would be around $900. Is that right?

2)Who would be the best vendor? When I pricescope diamonds of the sort I might be interested in buying I come up with abazias, usa certed, i.d. jewelry and whiteflash. Whiteflash is the only one of these vendors that I see people discuss in these forums a lot--in fact they (and goodoldgold) seem sort of ''promoted'' here. Are the other ones good too?

3) Do I end up spending a lot more money in the long run by going the ''upgrade'' route? That is, would I get a better deal by saving until I had $1200 or $2000 and getting what I wanted straight out, probably in 2010 rather than in 2009? I have a kind of impression that jewellers who upgrade also charge more money from the research I''ve done so far, but this may be wrong.

Thanks for answering my questions! I feel a little nervous posting for the first time but from all my reading here in the past 3 or 4 month, you all seem to be kind!

Hi Jade and welcome! Don't be nervous, everyone is very nice here and we work hard to keep a positive and educational atmosphere!

I think a pendant is doable definitely, would you ultimately want to upgrade it so you could go bigger over time - same with earrings? If so then it might be worth going with a vendor who has a lifetime upgrade policy, so that as you can afford it, your diamond can get bigger if you so wish.

Also a lower colour and perhaps SI clarity if verified eyeclean could be a good choice certainly if the cut is great, I also love the warmer colours so we think similarly!

Jade, I am going to request that this thread be moved to Rocky Talk as you will get more ideas there.

You might want to stick with GOG or WF because their upgrade policies are for any larger value item, while at JA you have to spend at least twice the original value. $600 will get you a lovely pendant if you're willing to look at lower color and clarity stones. WF isn't listing much in your budget just ow, but they usually have more than shows on the webpage. Just know that at WF the ready-set-go items aren't upgradeable, you'll have to pick a setting and a stone (which is more fun anyway). Does anyone know what Wink's upgrade policy is? I didn't find it on the website.

Welcome to PS and good luck with your search!

ETA: WFs ACAs at or near your budget. These prices are before the PS discount. The J si1 with the 54% table is a beauty.

Thanks to lorelei and mercoledi for responding to my post and for the help! It is good to know that there are a selection of stones within the budget that I am interested in for a pendant.
I''ll look at WF and GOG and also at Wink.
At Whiteflash, is it only in the ACA section that I will find well-cut stones?
And I assume that for $500-600 earrings are out of the question, unless I get pre-set ones that aren''t upgradeable? I''m estimating I would need $900-$1000 for earrings that I could upgrade--is that about right?
Thanks! (I was always bad at math)

Hi BJ,

Lorelei''s gone for the night, and I don''t see merc around, so I''ll try to answer your questions.

First, no, you can find some very nicely cut stones in the Expert Selection, but, you need to know what you''re looking for, as some are not close.

And yes, at the smaller budget you''d be looking at the Ready Set to Go, which are not upgradable.

If you raised it, there are options. WF, GOG and others at maybe .50ctw I-J SI1, or GOG''s uncerted H&A''s, which would all be upgradable.

Everything Ellen said. I was looking for ES''s for you because they can be a little cheaper, but WF didn''t really have any ES''s in your budget.

You may wish to start by contacting GOG or WF or both and letting them know what you''re looking for and what your budget is. Especially for smaller stones (.25ct ish) it''s hard for us to look online, much of that inventory isn''t made public. Make the vendors work for you!

welcome

Welcome! I hope you find what you are looking for, if you look on the different Online jewelry sites many have different options :)

Thanks for all the replies and advice.
The H & A stud earrings from Good Old Good sound as if they might be interesting. Two questions though. I notice they have quite a range of colors. Would you know what you were getting? Or do they just give you anything they happen to have, from G to J?
Also, are H & A''s so much better that it wouldn''t matter if you get SI3-I1 earrings? I have never seen H & A''s, to my knowledge. But I have seen I1''s. The prices on GOG seem high for I1--is the H & A cut so much better that it doesn''t matter?

Hi BlackJade, I don''t know the answer to your question, so I''m giving you a bump.

I would guess that you can ask GOG for a certain color if that''s important to you. And yes, a H&A stone does often cut more, but any ideal cut stone will have better light return and a larger presence than a non-ideal cut. Not all H&A''s are ideal, and not all ideal cut stones are H&A''s but GOG won''t steer you wrong. Many PSers go with lower color and clarity in earrings than with a ring because earrings don''t usually get stared at the same way. If you want eye-clean stones, be sure to specify that.
