New guy with inclusion on stone, and a grading question

Hi all,

I've been browsing the forum on and off for a little while and have now found the courage to ask for some advice; as I don't want to look like an idiot

Basically at Christmas past I decided to propose to my girlfriend and the hunt for a ring began. My family has a jeweller they have used for a number of years and they had a ring that went on sale that looked perfect. The diamond wasn't certified (a mistake now I know) but given past purchases spanning 20 years I felt comfortable buying from them.

The ring in question is 18ct white gold with a round brilliant cut .4ct stone. I now have some concerns about the quality of the stone:

Obviously I don't know the grade as its not certificated, but that aside, on one side of the stone (two sides are visible in the setting) there is an inclusion. It appears as a thin line that forms a 'V' on the side of the stone. It runs from girdle a quarter of the way down the stone and back up to the girdle. Some of it is very hard to see, but crucially you can see it with the naked eye.

I guess my worry is that the stone is really only fit for the trash, and worth very little? Although am I correct in my assumption that inclusions on the side of stones that are eye visable really make no difference as all stones are graded from the top only? Naturally I appreciate there's more to grading than just clarity, but when you have something this obvious it is a worry.

I did offer to buy a certified stone of very high quality for my fiancé and have that set in the ring, but she is of the opinion "that's the one you bought me" :D

Anyone care to offer their input on this? It would be much appreciated. ;)

If your SO is happy with the stone and wants to keep it, then it's worth a lot more than trash :) If only two sides of the diamond show, you could always have the diamond rotated in the setting to hide the inclusion? In my opinion, inclusions alone don't decide whether a stone is worth purchasing or not. But, I'm not very clarity sensitive. Some people are more sensitive to inclusions than others, and would be upset with the inclusion you described. As long as it doesn't present any safety concerns, I'd probably be fine with it.

I can't weigh in on the actual $$ worth of the diamond without quite a bit more information that you don't have right now. If you feel like you need this information to assess whether the stone is good enough for you (or of enough $ value), you could send the stone to GIA for an evaluation and/or have an independent appraisal of the unmounted stone done.

Since it doesn't bother her, I'd let it go. You can always buy her a new diamond ring in the future as an anniversary gift, but please come here first and let us help you!

To lurkers reading this thread....don't buy uncertified diamonds....and buy only those with GIA or AGS reports!

Thanks to you both :D It is annoying when you put your faith in someone though; lesson learnt!
