Well, I think I found the right place. At least I''ve been trying to read up on all the information and am quite impressed.

Planning on getting married next year and it''s time to pick up the ring.

She''s pretty much made her decision on what she wants, now I just need to figure out what I want to spend.

She wants a 1.5ct Asscher with a white gold, three stone bagget style band. She''s found 3 she really likes (A Jaffe, Natalie K, S.C.C.).

Seems like every store we go to the price keeps going up on the diamond. However, I must say that at each store, the quality of the diamond is that much better with comprable ratings.

After looking, seems like there''s a big hike from 1.2 to 1.5 and the 1.2 price looks much more attractive to me. Not too sure on my budget but I''d rather stay under 10K and prefer staying somewhere around 6K i.e. the attractiveness of the 1.2.

After looking at many of the sponsors, I noticed they don''t really carry a large # of bands compared to the stores I''ve been to, any reason for this?

If I bought a diamond online, what would be the best way to get a band very comprable to what I''m looking for?

GT,

Here''s two you might consider. Jonathan is known to be quite good on non-rounds, and also, I believe is well represented by rings, bands, & such, though I''ve never had much luck with his web site looking at those.

It doesn''t seem like that big of a cost jump from 1.0 to 1.25, but from 1.25 to 1.5 it''s damn near exponential.

Can someone explain this?

Ira... no offense but those are, um... but really those aren''t great recommendations.

The smaller one has a terrible DiamXray, and caused by it''s symmetry issues. And my 1.09 is virtually the same size as that one.

The second one is out of square and also has only ''good'' symmetry as well.

Best thing I can say for both of them is that their crown heights are good (1.5 has better crown height) and the polish is good.

I do however second Ira''s suggestion of GOG for Asschers. Mark at ERD has a good eye for step cuts too.

Is the one that a vendor HAS PICTURES OF that I would say has promise. It''s an I... and that might be a little warm. But it sounds like your lady is a size lady. Ideally it would be great to have that one be an H VS2, but good asschers are hard to find, and this one has some potential. At least enough to ask for an Ideal Scope. It''s got good spread... almost 6.5 by 6.5 and with the setting in palladium or White Gold... it''ll put you at around 10 K.

I would ask her what she considers her priorities.

Size or Color? If she says she wants an ICY white diamond... well, stay at G or above and drop in size.

But if she says size... this is one to ask for more information on.

Well...all I can say is...thank goodness people do speak up on this board.

Thanks, Gypsy.

Really, all I did was fish into the search by cut db, and pulled up what showed up. It didn''t occur too much to me to look into what they were.

I see that was naive, probably.

yea a little,,,
Getting in great asschers pretty much requires working with a vendor.
Lets say that GOG calls in 3.. all 3 go up on the website for the client too look at, 2 are only so-so client buys the 3rd.
It sometimes takes a while for the other 2 too be removed.

Also, I'm seeing this thread in the FAQ section, Why Asscher Pictures are hard https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/why-good-asscher-photos-are-hard.37525/

The first post is supposed to be level but I don't see it, I see all the others, can someone point me to what a level one looks like?
There was a glitch in the server and the first pic disappeared so the first one there now is 2 degrees tilt.
look down further too the group and the level one is there.

1.5ct asscher is like the 1ct rounds price jump wise, a lot of demand.
Well cut 1.5''s carry a premium.

I was worried you would take offense, and so glad you didn''t Ira. Thanks!

thx, this helps alot when comparing the GOG ones. They''re nothing close.

She''s been pretty happy with VS2/VS1 and H but we''re both not nearly as educated as we should be.

I don''t think any store has mentioned cut once. It''s been mostly about color and clarity. Sits 2 next to each other and says, ''see the color difference'' and look into this one with a loop and then compare to this one, ''see the differences in inclusions''.

After reading thru here it seems like cut is most important, and that I probably want to be looking for I-G, SI1-VS2 with a good cut.

Plus I think she''s more excited about the whole arrangement, then just the diamond, i.e. she doesn''t even care about platinum and is happy with white gold. And the damn rings, bagget style, are really expensive as well.

when I said good cut above I meant ''ideal'', just learn''n the diamond lingo

.
Can you explain how your 1.09 is close to that 1.25. Is it b/c of length / width? How would I go about looking at this as well.

As for symmetry, I read in one of the faqs that most retailers and consumers both did not like ''good'' symmetry, it said the same for the polish. Is the general concensus to get at least VG then on polish/symmetry

vg/vg is fine and more common, good can be ok but when shopping online and calling in stones my advice is dont.
The problem is you cant tell why it got good until your out money calling it in.
It might be 1 facet that it dont matter much but you cant tell untill someone looks at it.

If she's okay with an H and excited more about the big picture than anything else... I'd contact James Allen about the I VVS I posted and ask for an Ideal Scope or ASET. And a Sarin. I think it has good possibilities and if you are bank wiring, the price will be less... giving you more toward the setting. JA also has a baguette setting, have her look at that too, it's a very affordable one.
