New Comer in need of advice!

Hi I have just noticed that I have spent the last 4 or 5 hours reading various forums and decided that it was time to join and get some opinions.

My boyfriend and I just started looking at diamonds and have found a few that we were interested in. If you wouldn''t mind, your opinion on the following would be greatly appreciated!

Our budget is no more than $10,000 and we were trying to look for the best thing that we could get for the price. I am definitely wanting something sparkly and know that the radiant cut is much more fiery than the asscher, but i also love the look of the asscher. Well any comments or suggestions are welcome! And I thank you all in advance!

Oh, also I was kind of torn between what online vendor to go through, we were originally looking at blue nile, and were very close to purchasing something until i came upon this site and decided that we should hold off until we were more educated. Thanks again!!

Welcome to Pricescope!

I don't know much about Asschers, but with the radiants, with the info and photos we have, I personally like the F SI1 diamond. Ask JA if they can send you some more pics of these radiants and an Idealscope image if possible, an IS isn't as useful as ASET for fancy shapes, but it could still be helpful. Also check the SI radiant is eyeclean to your standards.

If your after something sparkly I would be inclined to say go for a radiant over an asscher, don''t get me wrong I love asschers but they are not as sparkly as other cuts.

I agree with Lorelei the F SI1 is the one I like the best based solely on the pictures alone .

Of the stones you selected the asscher doesn''t look like a nice one. However, as Lorelei mentioned the F/SI radiant looks lovely and has some potential. Best to get an ideal scope and asset image to know more. The other radiant isn''t bad either, but I prefer the first.

I would recommend going to see radiants and asschers in person to decide which shape you like better. They have completely different looks. Both usually face up small compared to rounds and don''t have as much sparkle as rounds. However, asschers will draw you in with the step cuts and their higher crown usually offers more fire than radiants. Radiants have a crushed ice sort of look with smaller pinpoint fire. Both are lovely shapes, but completely different.

Thank you for all of your quick responses. I have seen both the asscher and radiant in person and lke them both, but initially we were going to go with a round brilliant. Until we spoke to someone at blue nile who reccomended that we get something no lower than a VS2 and a color no lower than an H, the RB suddenly became out of reach. He said that there would not be as much brillinance and fire in the diamond if we did not choose something in this nature. So, we moved on to looking at the radiants and from what i have read are supposed to be the cut with the closest amount of fire and brilliance compared to the round but at a lower price. Is this true?? I am just in the look out for something that when people lookk at my ring, they will be like "wow!"

I really don''t have to have any particular shape, just looking for a great stone that has a balance of size and sparkly brilliance!

Seeing the different stones when I go to a B&M, they all look beautiful to me, (I guess its the lighting) I mean they look sparkly no matter what the clarity is. I am just confused about what to look for, and the more i read these forums, the more my mind keeps on jumping around.

If you want something sparkly, but not an RB you might want to consider the Jubilee or the Princess of Hearts. They both give off big flashes. Good Old Gold usually has a good selection. I personally prefer asschers, but if it is sparkle that you want, then an asscher is probably not for you. Radiants and asschers both cannot really be judged by numbers and need pictures and ASET or IS images. Also, going down in color in an RB if you are not color sensitive will be okay. There is a thread here that shows J colored stones, if you still want to consider an RB. Just some ideas!

In my personal opinion you received some poor advice from the BN guy. Clarity and color is not really want makes a sparkly stone, CUT is!!! Unfortunately, well cut radiants and asschers will not have the same sparkle as a well-cut round.

If you want sparkle, I think you should consider lowing your color and clarity and focusing on getting a well-cut round!!! This is really what''s going to sparkle the most. Many here have J/SI2 stones that face up white and bright when well-cut and can be an incredible value!!

These are some excellent cuts if you don''t want to sacrifice performance, but you want a non-traditional shape. I''d love to own a square hearts and arrows someday!!! All of them have slight differences and you might want to call up the folks at GOG to learn more. I''m not sure how they are priced relative to each other, but all of them are probably slightly more expensive than a traditional non-branded round.

I am very far from being an expert, but I believe the cut corner square brilliant gives off small flashes (more like a princess) while the POH, Jub, and Square H&A have bigger flashes associated with Hearts and Arrows. Price wise, I have no idea as it depends on the color and clarity.

I''d pass on that asscher in a heartbeat. It''s actually a squarish emerald cut (you''ll notice the cutlet) and not a square emerald cut...if that makes any sense. That isn''t actually a bad thing, but what is bad is the combination of a very shallow diamond (this one is only 61%) with a larger table. I think that''s why this one has such a dark center...it seems like a very flat, unlively diamond.

I really think that you should stick with a round if that''s what you originally wanted. The BN guy was just giving you the typical "don''t go below an H" sales pitch, which doesn''t hold water against a well-cut stone. Besides, if you are truly color sensitive, asschers and radiants are the last cuts you''d want...they show body color much more than a round.

Ok so i definitely think that I am set on the Jubilee and the Princess of Hearts. They have the brilliance and fire of rounds but the square cut so i get the best of both worlds! So my next question is...Are there any other vendors that carry these shapes besides GOG? They have a very limited selection right now that fits in my BF''s budget.

I did happen to find this one, but I was wondering if the K color is pushing it over the limits.

Back to the point, rubbish from the BN consultant! Check our arjunajane's Perry - she is a lovely K SI2 (not 100 sure on the clarity, could be SI1) and she is stunning with a capital stunning!!!! Arjunajane also had a lovely PoH that she traded in for Perry, so you can check out her posts to see that gorgeous little stone too!

May I also suggest getting a round stone and setting it in a 4 prong solitaire, it can give the illusion of a squarer stone?

Those GOG diamonds look fine, but as to the K colour and I1 clarity, you need to ask Jon whether the I1 is eyeclean, and how the K looks.
