Hi all,

First time poster but long time reader. :-)

I'm curious to know if my partner and I overpaid for a loose diamond from expressdiamonds.com.au/ GS diamonds. I've recently been doing some research into upgrading the centre stone in my engagement ring and came across many threads & blog entries about EGL international's lax grading. Could you folks please take a look at the price & specs below and let me know if we overpaid by a lot or a little for the diamond bought in 2008?

EGL international diamond certificate:
Carats- 0.90
Shape- Round Brilliant
Measurements- 6.15-6.11 x 3.96 mm
Proportions-
Total depth 64.6%
Total width 54%
Crown height 17%
Pavilion depth 45%
Girdle thickness medium

Finish-
Polish & symmetry Very Good no culet
Clarity- VS2 no graining
Colour- G no fluorescence

We bought it for $4500 Australian dollars in 2008.

Hope you can help.

Cheers :-D

It is difficult for most of the uber helpful people here to figure this out. They would almost need to have purchased a diamond with nearly identical stats...because how else would they know the pricing from 4 years ago, you know? :twirl: Add in the fact that diamond pricing is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive in Oz than the States, and it would be nearly impossible to determine. You can probably safely assume you did overpay - we all do the first time around, pre-Pricescope!

It's my opinion that anyone that purchased an EGL diamond has overpaid, but by how much is impossible to tell with the information that you have. The problem is not knowing what the correct grading for your stone is. The truth is you don't know if it's a G or a J, a VS2, or an SI2. Without knowing the correct grading of your stone, you can't begin to go back four years and compare prices.

Thank you for the replies. It was a shot in the dark but I appreciate the honest opinions. I'll just chalk it up to lesson learnt. I really thought we'd covered all basis before the purchase. Everything is overpriced here in Australia, not just diamonds I'm afraid.

Cheers.

Yes about everything being over priced in Aust.

Plus, dont forget that our diamond prices fluctuate daily with the Aust dollar. So 4 years ago when the Aust dollar was about 70cents every diamond was about 20 to 30% more than the same US dollar priced diamond today.

Diamond prices are very sensitive to the Aust dollar. Even my diamond that I bought in Aust about 2 months ago with the Aust dollar over $1 would be about 10% or more if I bought the same diamond today because prices of diamonds are based on US prices.
