I have been looking around forever but I am am hoping to propose soon so time is becoming an issue. I have primarily been looking at antique/vintage rings. They offer a nicer price, and I tend to like the look more than some newer styles (hopefully my gf will as well).

I had almost pulled the trigger on a vintage one of a kind ring which was very beautiful, but I know that my gf is big into "name" designers so I took one last look around.

I found what looks to be a nice older "Tiffany" ring. But I had some questions.

1. Is there anyway to be sure it is truly a Tiffany? It says it is stamped on the ring, though it is hard to read from the pictures. Is there anything I should be on the lookout for?

2. If I decide to go that route, it comes with some tiffany boxes/pouches, but not the black velvet ring box. I have been unable to locate such a box. Does anyone happen to know where to find one?

Thanks for any help.

You can check the SKU number on the certificate and call Tiffany to verify it is a tiffany ring and that it has not been reported stolen

Thank you for the response.

Unfortunately, this is a "vintage" ring from I think the 70's or so and does not have the original paperwork...

If it doesn't have paperwork, it would still have a serial number engraved on it from the inside. You can ask the seller about the number and verify with Tiffany.

If not possible, you can check the seller's return policy. You can take the ring to the nearest Tiffany to have it checked.

After talking with the seller, this ring is likely from around the 1930's. I don't know if there is any real way to authenticate something that old. I think that was well before they were stamping numbers inside the band.

It does say Tiffany and Co but that could easily be faked...not sure what to do now!

Sometimes misc Tiffany packaging shows up on eBay. You can keep an eye out there.

What is the return policy on the ring?

Thanks. The return policy is two weeks, which seems pretty reasonable. But I'm not sure where I could take it to get it authenticated. I don't know if a store would authenticate something that old.

There are plenty of threads on here about people trying to get older Tiffany pieces authenticated (you can do a search) but iirc basically Tiffany doesn't authenticate anything they don't currently carry. I don't know whether or not that applies to if you ship it off to have it authenticated, but that's a service you have to pay for anyway. I would see if you can find an appraiser local to you (perhaps through an auction house) that is experienced with signed pieces.

The easiest way to find out is call Tiffany customer service and ask them whether they can authenticate the ring or not. Only Tiffany customer service knows the answer to your question. If they say yes, you can go to the nearest Tiffany store.

You can go to Tiffany website and find the nearest store location. Only Tiffany can tell if it is a real Tiffany piece or not. If Tiffany cannot tell, I wouldn't trust anybody else.

NKC, we've had many, many threads on this subject, and Tiffany retail stores don't really do authentications. You can have it sent to Tiffany in NYC, but even then I am not sure if they will actually authenticate anything that's not in the current line - though they will still make you pay several hundred for the privilege of having them tell you they can't authenticate it. That's why I suggested he look through the previous threads on this to see what other people have had happen and maybe find an appraiser who has expertise with signed pieces, since it may not be possible for Tiffany to authenticate it with their brand behind it, even if it IS a real Tiffany piece.
