Can someone give me the quick & dirty on when these will be in effect, and whether each will be fool-proof / relatively trustworthy (in terms of if you select the highest rating from each, you''ll be assured you''re getting a super ideal cut diamond)? I know there have many previous posts, and I''m looking through, but not finding the nutshell answer about when they''re coming out.

Thanks!

Foolproof, you are not going to get. But certainly the AGS diamond grading standards will be better than the existing standards. Yes, the AGS standards will be relatively trustworthy.

"Super ideal cut" is not an AGS term. This term is reserved for those that are AGS Ideal AND have superior H&A images.

If you are looking for a diamond then get the best possible diamond now. You can find the best possible information here on PS. Will your diamond be the best in 10 or 15 years with future technology...who knows??

I will say that the price of diamonds, especially higher quality diamonds, is going up almost every other month. Two forces drive these prices; the price of the U.S. dollar keeps going down which is driving up the price of diamonds and the gas for your car. You see both diamonds and oil are traded with the U.S. dollar. The other force is the higher quality (D-F) (IF-VS1) diamonds are becoming more scarce. More people want these diamonds and they were rare to begin with. If you have one house and three buyers...the price goes up.

Thanks.  If it were up to me, I know how to get a super ideal cut diamond now, I''ve been browsing on PS for a while now and would go through one of the vendors and use the HCA, idealscope and all the rest of it.  However, my BF will be making the diamond purchase solo, and is not wanting to learn all of this, so I''m looking for a way to make it really easy for him.  Saying, "Get a GIA or AGS certified diamond, eiterh GIA 1 or AGS 0 cut grade" is easy.  That''s what we need! So, I''m wondering when they''ll be out and how to go about using the new cut grades to our advantage!

Thanks!

The first AGS 0' rounds will be from June 1st and they will be far stichter than GIA.

GIA ??????????

Great - so basically, any AGS certified diamond where the cert is dated after June 1 05 has been graded in the new system? In terms of diamonds that have been certified already prior to this, will there be a big rush to send them all back in at once for a new grade? (Basically, I''m asking, how long after June 1 will the newly cut certified diamonds actually be widely available?)

Thanks!

Since some months, anyone who submits his stones to AGS, also receives the grade according to the new system. Probably, AGS will print the new report for these stones, for anyone who asks.

Live long,

Thanks! So, basically, in real world application, if my bf is shopping all on his own for diamonds through local vendors, I could tell him to look for any AGS certified 000 stone where the cert is dated after say February 2005, or I could tell him if it''s older to have the vendor call AGS and see what the new cut grade would be to make sure it''s still 000?

From what I understood, the old 000 cut grades were generally OK, but there was a zone in there of steep/deep stones that were not great at all. So, if it''s an old AGS cert, but they make sure to check where the stone would fall within the new system, and previous steep/deep stones that were AGS 0 but would be no longer will be eliminated, right?

I''m confused!

Thanks everyone for your help. I will be SO happy if I can feel safe just saying to him "get any AGS 0 cut stone" with these new guidelines.

Another question - even under the old guidelines, if it''s an AGS 000 stone that also exhibits a near perfect H&A pattern, it should be a great performer no matter what, right? A H&A stone that is also AGS 0 wouldn''t possibly be one of the steep/deep ones, right?
