Hi all,

My boyfriend took me to look at diamonds at Jared and I fell in love with a 1.65 CT brilliant round diamond. He started financing it and designed a ring for it to go in and now I'm nervous that we aren't getting a good deal or a good diamond. HELP!

GIA Report:

2126268835

We don't understand all of the different angles and percentages... etc. I just know that I thought it was a good cut, a good size and that I didn't see any inclusions.

Please let me know if you need any other information... I don't want to spend so much money on a dud.

Thank you so much in advance!!

The HCA tool shows it as a 2.6. You want to stay below 2. Others can chime in on other aspects. If you don't mind posting budget I'm sure fellow PSers can find you a beautiful stone.

Thank you so much for responding!

This one is $10k.

I think that is roughly our budget for the center stone...

What makes this one not good? It looks so beautiful in the store and I couldn't see any dark spots on it!

There are certainly better cut diamonds out there then this one!!! If you DO love it, try not to spend more than $10K on the stone. Most people here however would suggest to KEEP LOOKING! You will have to sacrifice on carat size (as the color and clarity are already as low as most people will go who still want a decent diamond) but there are many better cut diamonds out there.

So I didn't run this through the HCA which you might want to do and the 2 number is only a suggested number. Being over or under doesn't mean it is bad. But based off the numbers on the cert that I'm seeing, I wouldn't purchase. Are you within your return period?

it only has a "very good" cut.
You want excellent/ideal only :)

We were told that the pricing was set on when the report was done... in 2011 so it is much lower than it would be today if it was re-certified. Is that a line?

I mostly wanted a larger diamond because I have larger fingers and thought it would look better.... but I would be willing to sacrifice some size for a better quality diamond.

What do you suggest? What cut is better? Is there anything in particular I should be looking for?

Jewerly store lightening is supposed to make any diamond look wonderful.

My personal concerns:
SI2 will show something when you are outside in natural daylight
I color will show color (if that bothers you...some it doesn't and they love I!)
The crown angle
The Depth

We are making payments on it... So I believe that we can cancel the order and search for a new diamond. We haven't actually purchased it yet! It looks like that is a good thing.

Yes... I ran the Holloway Cut Adviser report and it got a 2.6.

You might want to look at James Allen. I think they are running a 25% off sale right now.

And perhaps instead of financing a ring you can buy one that has an amazing upgrade policy. Totally your choice but I know I'm a bit of a size ho (loving term we ladies on PS call ourselves who like size above all else :) ) and I liked the options that good upgrade policy can give you.

HAHA... I didn't want to sound crass... but in this instance size DOES matter. :)

I just looked on james allen and found SKU 354662... is that better? It says ideal cut and still is the size I want....

HI:

Is this your diamond?

http://www.gia.edu/cs/Satellite?reportno=2126268835&childpagename=GIA%2FPage%2FReportCheck&pagename=GIA%2FDispatcher&c=Page&cid=1355954554547

By dimension this diamond is facing up smaller compared to an ideal cut stone of similar carat weight. I suspect the depth of 64.3% and thick girdle has a lot to do with that.

I would return this diamond and get one that "looks" like the size/for carat weight it should be.

PS: please post links here to the stones you are interested in. Makes it easier to provide more timely feedback.

cheers--Sharon

I contacted Jared and they are going to pull some new diamonds for us to go look at next week that are ideal cut and better clarity. I'm glad they are being so awesome about this!

Thank you so much for your help everyone... I hope we make a better choice this time around!!!

I'll make sure to check GIA and HCA BEFORE committing!!!

Check out whiteflash or some of the other vendors. I just purchased my e ring from brilliantly engaged but have spoken to other vendors and they seem to be great.

As a side note you can purchase tax free from wf for example and report later to your state, :)

I think you'll find that Jared's is not usually recommended on this site for a number of reasons. I'd worry that the stones they bring in for you will be a lot more expensive than those you'll find elsewhere. James Allen seems like a great option for you, especially with the 25% discount!

Hi Rimalcomb -

Try this:

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?stockno=LD05081285

It's stats are very good - FAR better than the one you've been considering. It's only 2 pts smaller - but since it's not cut so very deep, it actually comes out about .2mm wider - a difference most people can pick up when they compare diamonds side by side. It's also a VS2, so WAY cleaner. It has a medium blue fluorescence, which will probably make it look a little whiter and, after wiring, it's BELOW 10k at $9930.77.

I think this hits all the bases and should be a lovely, lovely stone. As for the previous Jared's stone, it's not something I would buy, or would consider buying, as I believe the inclusions would probably be visible, and the light performance would be unacceptable.

I hope this helps; for what it's worth, the stone I've linked to is certainly one I'd buy.

Well it is not an "ideal " stone

Symmetry is Good
Cute is Very good
Poiish is very good

you want 3X excellent excellent excellent

Depth 64.3
Table 56
crown angel 37.5
crown height 17%
Pavilion angel 40.4
Pavilion d 425

Ideal diamonds would have:

Table 54-58
Depth 60-62.3
Crown angle 34-35
15.3%
crown perfecnt 14.2

Way too deep!.. :knockout:

I would return your Jareds purchase and run far away, fast.

I bought a diamond at Jared's a few years ago. It was GIA XXX with super ideal proportions. Loved the diamond, but overpaid by a ton. Next diamond I purchased was a Brian Gavin signature. If you do stick with Jared, I would suggest getting online and taking a look at their loose diamond database, pulling up proportions on the grading reports, putting numbers through HCA, and screening them to determine what diamonds YOU want them to bring in to look at.

Thank you so much everyone for your guidance and help.

I think once we go back to Jared I will try to just get all of the money he has paid so far (about $4k) back and look online.

The only thing that concerns me about buying online is that you don't get to SEE the diamond before you buy.... but it does seem like that is what everyone on this forum recommends so it must be legit from the few sites that have been recommended... bluenile, james allen, etc.

If anyone else stumbles on a diamond that looks good please let me know!

That 1.63 on blue nile looks pretty good except not all the numbers are there for me to figure out if it's a 2.0 or below on the HCA scale.

I'm assuming your original diamond was 10500 without tax. On ps homepage do a quick search and you'll find vendors that have similar size ideal cuts particularity white flash. Good luck

rlmalcomb,

The numbers ARE at Blue Nile website. You have to click on the GIA logo, the certificate will pop up with all the numbers to do HCA.

ok... here are 2 that i have found that are pretty close in everything...

GIA 2186286312
1.71 carat
I
VS1
HCA 1.0
$10523

GIA 1179914472
1.62
I
VVSI
HCA .9
$11046

the smaller diamond is about the same size as the other one because of cut... but has less fluorescence. i was leaning towards the larger one because of the stronger blue fluorescence. what are your thoughts on that?

which one of these would you choose?

Good to hear - I wouldn't shop at Jared and as you've learned here already, you will get much more bang for your buck elsewhere.
