Hello everyone,

My girlfriend fell in love with this Gelin Abaci ring TR-203. I have a friend that is a jeweler but his shop doesn''t carry GA rings, he called today and said that the casting house that they use could make the same ring. Do I consider this route or just stick with the GA ring?

Thank you.

Hi Miro,

I love that ring and tension set in general. I would NOT get just anyone to make a tension ring. That is because the metal needs to be worked or hardened in some manner (except for titanium) to give it enough spring or tension to hold the stone safely in place. Just casting a ring without doing this will not be secure enough. If a bridge or piece of metal connects the ring underneath the stone then that is okay, as it is not true tension and the completed circle provides the tension to hold the stone. True tension like the one you posted where the metal is not a completed circle needs to be done by experts in the field (in MHO)

There are 3 manufacturers that I would trust (that I know of) G&A, Steven Kretchmer and Niessing in Germany.

Please do a search on here on tension and read what comes up. I believe they are perfectly safe if done in the correct manner by a specialist in the field.

Good luck! let us know what you decide on. Oh and welcome to PS!

I love tension sets too. I agree with the post above. Make sure you have a really reputable person do this for you. My original e ring setting was a tension setting as well. I had several problems with the diamond "slipping" and not staying in place. It was never in risk of falling out, but just shifting forward and backward. Since reading all the info on pricescope I have learned SOOOOO much. I now realize my jeweler was just in it for the buck from me and wasn''t concerned with my diamond staying in place. Sorry to rant--but I did love my tension set. Wish I had found this site earlier and I could have had the tension done properly. Good luck! Go with the reputable one. It will save you tons of grief later on.
