need your help! is this diamond ring worth it?

i seen this ring on ebay for $4500 they have included a insurance appraisal from legend jewelrers inc. it says its worth is $8384.50. here is the description or the ring with the diamonds according to the appraisal.

It''s not square. And it''s a rather thick set, in yellow gold, which is not really the style these days (which would be fine if it''s HER style!)

what do u mean its a thick set? and yes she wants a yellow gold princess cut diamond ring. but is the diamonds worth the price?

It is also an I1 in clarity, this means it will most likely have visible inclusions. I think find a much higher quality stone and setting with a pricescope vendor.

Well, I'm pretty sure an I1 clarity stone would be under 3K. Also, the appraisal is done by the jeweler, not an appraiser. I see no "graduate gemologist" or some other credentials below the signature. Maybe it is an I I1, but maybe it's not!

Ok, so I tried to put something like that together myself.

http://www.exceldiamonds.com/diamond/31189.html 1 ct I I1 (a broad grade, not all I1s are created equally,) smaller than that stone, but has the AGS report (which carries a big price difference over a stone without a report) and the "ideal" cut grade.

Wedding set, 1.41 cts of princess sidestones http://www.thefacetscollection.com/item.cfm?item_id=2742&show_metal=18K%20Yellow%20Gold with higher color and clarity, but lower carat weight.

Total of 4.7K So this set, which is second hand, should be significantly less than what I can put together myself, for it to be worth it to me.

As usual, Julie demonstrates how much better you can do. If I were you, I''d run from that deal and do exactly what Julie showed you. You''d be getting something of obvious quality from reputable vendors. This alone is worth more than the $200 additional cost you''d incur and you''d never regret your investment.

Buyer BEWARE when looking at items so expensive on Ebay. Horror stories abound.............

I think I color and I1 clarity are ok if the color and inclusions do not bother you, there is a good return policy, and the clarity grade has a negligible effect on the performance and durability of the stone.

i want the diamond with no noticable inclusions and not much of a color? what do u think i should go for?

A better quality diamond would be clarity for sure. Color is something that depends on you. The lower the color you will see a yellowish color to it. You will want to look at how the stone is cut as well.

The appraisal isn''t worth the paper it''s printed on. Like others have said, it''s cuz it''s the appraisal by the jeweler. You see it all the time when jewelry stores hold 75% off sales ALL the time. If that were true, they''d never be able to stay in business. They just throw out any number and offer it for far less to make you think you''re getting a great deal.

I would say that as long as you have an appraisal from the GIA or AGS, then I-J, SI1-SI2 is a good start.

Check out a site like Blue Nile.

You can make your own ring or get something preset.

Preset ring: 1 carat, princess cut, I VS2 or better, 18k white gold for $3400

3 stone ring: 1 carat total weight, princess cut, H VS2 or better in platinum for $3300

Or you can build something yourself like this
