Here I am finding this site so late in my search for a great deal. I am at crossroads and need your help. My budget is 9k out of it 8k is for the stone. I am looking at round cut. 1.4 to 1.5. G H I. Si2 but must be eye clean. I found one stone on james allen .com for 9K (over my budget) and one through a friends family member who brought me an 7800$ uncertified stone and rated it at 1.42 H color, SI2 or Si1. Its eye clean he had to show me imperfections as they all on sides. He is willing and more then happy to take me to an EGL lab in NY to have it apprased at my cost. He said GIA takes to long and independent appraisers he doesn't trust with his stones... What should I do?

I would not buy a EGL diamond at all. If I were you I would go up in quality down in size. Here is one from WF, they have an excellent trade in value if you ever want to upgrade in size. I would rather have excellent quality in a smaller size :twirl:

ask him to send it to ags. they have a quicker turnaround. I'd hedge a bet that he only wants it to go to EGL because he knows GIA/ a GG appraiser will not concur with his opinion of the stone's grading. Plus you have no idea what the cut is- if you've read a bit on here you will see that is the MOST important part of determining how sparkly and brilliant a diamond is. Do NOT go uncertified to save a few dollars.... you have no idea what you are buying that way and will likely get burnt.

I think you can get a great, well-cut stone if you go down a bit in size, but the sparkle factor of having a great cut will make it look better than a crappy 1.4!
Here are some examples, check with the vendor to confirm eye-clean:
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2270390.htm (should not be an issue of eye-clean because it is a VS2)

Here's a 1.34 that gets a great HCA score and is close to your budget, you will have to have them check eye-clean and ask for idealscope image. Might not be eye clean but can't tell from the super-magnified image.

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/diamond-detail/?product_id=BLAGS-104052029008 This one is a blue which has flourescence that can make it face up a bit whiter, but an I is actually pretty white and you likely won't notice any tint....especially comparing to an uncerted H which is likely at least a J.

These vendors offer a nice upgrade policy (except not sure about James Allen) if you want to go bigger down the road, 30 day returns, and pricescope member prices (you will have to ask BGD for the extra discount on top of the wire, I think it's an additional 2% off for a total of 5% wire/pricescope total discount). AND you know what you are getting.

Here is another one from BGD's Blue line you could put more into the setting, he also has a great trade in policy. You would have to call for the pricescope discount :twirl:

I love the way it tapers in, it really makes the center stone stick out

This one might be in reach with PS discount on the diamond, not sure

Just forget uncertified stones and especially ones through friends of friends or family members. There is only one reason a stone is not certified, and that is because they think they can get more for it if they optimistically "estimate" the specs on the stone than if it is graded correctly. GIA or an independent appraiser would hold a lot more weight for me than EGL. They are trying to take advantage of you.

The reality is, diamonds have gone up a lot recently and you probably need to go down a little in size to meet your budget. I second using WhiteFlash or Brian Gavin because both have outstanding stones.

Thanks guys! i forgot about the uncertified one. the only reason i was considering it because he just returned from the Las Vegas diamond show, and i couldnt find any imperfections so i figured that it might have been an awesome deal.

thanks for the web sites... i will look closely at both...

what do you guys think of this

those straight lines on the GIA report, do you think it will still be eye clean?

thanks

I would stick with the in house (not virtual inventory or virtual stones) stones. Those are ones that have been hand-picked to meet specific performance specifications. Getting stones called in will cost you money in shipping and if the stone isn't a good one (cannot tell eye-clean from a report) you are out the shipping $$. Stick with the in house stones as you have been given links to above.

well first off, GIS is stricter in their grading, so that stone from a friends family member may very well come bck as a 1.42 J SI2 I1 if graded by GIA. That may be part of the reason he doesnt want to send it to GIA. :((

you can always call BGD and ask if the stone is indeed eye-clean.
