I am just starting to educate myself and research how I am going to make my dream upgrade happen. I currently have a 1.81 round brilliant and would love a 2.2-2.5 round upgrade with better characteristics than my current stone (I'd love a G with no visible inclusions and triple Ex preferred).
After I find the right jewelry vendor, ideally I'd like to trade my stone in and use it as a credit towards the bigger stone.
Would you be able to tell me roughly what my current stone would be worth as a trade-in and how do these vendors do trade-ins?
Here are the details of my diamond:
It has an EGL cert
1.81 Round Brilliant H VS2
8.01-7.89 x 4.79mm
Depth: 60.3%
Table: 57%
Crown: 14.3%
Pavilion: 42.8%
Girdle: very thin to thin polished
Culet: very small
Polish: very good
Symmetry: good
Fluorescence: none

I don't know any online venders that do trades, unless you purchased from one that had an upgrade policy....some retail stores may, I think your best bet is to try to sell it yourself.

I did a search and found a couple of EGL 1.80 H VS2 selling for around $12,500...I really don't know but 50% of that may not be out of line.

we purchased from a family friend a while ago who is no longer a friend of the family so he is out of the question. How do I sell myself? Like on ebay/Craigslist?
If I went through a diamond vendor at the jewelry mart in downtown LA wouldn't they be able to help me trade-up my diamond without the extra charges of a free-standing 'brick and mortar' jewelry store?

You can co-sign your diamond with places like Jewels By Erica Grace or Pearlmans. However they will take a % off the top. You can also list on Ebay, LoupeTroop (started by a PS member) and Diamondbistro. I think you should expect to take at least 30% off the top if you sale it yourself. You have an EGL cert which is a lab that most people (especially on PS) consider to be a soft grader. So most likly it might be easier to sell if you have a GIA cert (will cost you under $200). But that is just an option.
