I am taking down my window boxes early to paint my house. I''ve wanted for years to come up with something to put in them for the fall/winter and now is a good time since I don''t want to put them back up empty. I am in a cold climate so nothing green will survive through the winter. None of the boxes will be viewed close-up...many are on my 2nd story. I have 15 window boxes to fil so I''m looking for something economical. Any ideas or links hugely appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi IslandDreams...I just wanted to say that I just picked up some 5" hardy mums at Home Depot for $.99 each! I got 12 to plant in two raised beds on the side of our house...I used them to fill in some spaces between perennials we had planted earlier this summer. I got orange and yellow ones, but there was a really pretty pinkish color also. I''m just outside of Chicago so I know they will last at least through October... if not I''m only out $12, though!

I like the antique colored pansies and the little johnny jump ups...violas. They bloom non stop.

Connitta, I love pansies and Johnny jump-ups as well. That is a great idea for window boxes.

Island Dreams, I wanted to give you an update on the $.99 mums I purchased at Home Depot--they are doing really well! Also, I was walking around the neighborhood last week and noticed that there is a house close to us which has mums planted in their second story window-boxes, it looked very nice. Let us know what you end up doing!

I do my window boxes in pansies every year. Mums look good for a short while where as pansies bloom their little selves to death and they will drape over the edges. The antique colors are soft pastels and I love them.
