i am about to invest in some diamond stud earrings for my wife on our 25th wedding anniversary (for putting up with me for so long :) ). my friend''s brother-in-law is sellling us the diamonds, and gave us a report. can someone please tell me if these are good stones? since i am making an investment, i want to know whether the stones are too deep or too shallow in cut? i''m told it should be in the middle for both, but i can''t tell by the numbers. i bought a diamond 27 years ago, so i don''t remember too much. obviously i want the best stones because she has been through so much and just beat cancer last year. i believe she deserves the best, so i want the best. brillance inside and outside is a must. please let me know. any experts on hand that can tell me just by looking at the stones? thanks in advance.

Hi sb, I''ll try to help you out. And just want to add that this is a really thoughtful gift!

OK, first, I have to ask, are these the specifications you asked for the diamonds to be, or did your friend just come up with them? The reason I ask is, the color and clarity are rather high, not really necessary, unless that''s exactly what one wants. If you lowered things a bit you''ll save quite a bit of money. For instance, you could go with G or H in color (and even lower if they are exceptionally cut) and as low as SI1 in clarity.

Other than that, your specs don''t look too bad. We like to have Crown and Pavillion angles to help determine cut (which to all of us is THE most important C) Do you know if the stones he''s offering come with a grading certificate, and by what lab? GIA and AGS are the most repected. Purchasing stones graded by them would help assure you''re getting a quality stone. And actually, if you asked him to find you AGS000 stones, it would take all the worry out of it.

I can certainly understand you wanting the best for your wife - she deserves it!!! So, lets try to help you with that...The first question I have is regarding what you think is the best. Those diamonds are a high colour and very high clarity, is this as important to you as the cut quality in order to give your wife the best? The reason I ask is like Miss Ellen says, you can drop much lower on both, even to an SI2 clarity in many instances and still have very white and clean diamonds. Some might say that the clarity being a VVS is overkill, but wanting the best can vary from person to person. Some must have very high colour and clarity as well as a great cut, some prefer lower clarity, sometimes colour etc, it depends. So if you want the high colour and clarity too - thats fine, just wanted you to be aware that you could drop both if you wished.

Regarding the cut on these diamonds, we can''t tell without those crown and pav angles, also we need the grading lab. With the info given, these might be fine, but we need the crown and pavillion to tell for sure. Have you looked to compare prices online? Just so you know what your options are before you pull the trigger and prices?

Link for crown and pavillion angles. Ask the jewler for the angles, it should be on the grading certificate.

The culet is the bottom facet on the diamond. Pointed is good.

I recognized the format of of the specs (weight, cut, color, clarity, etc) as the same one that BN uses. It's just a hop to PS search to confirm.

Well, I hope he compares the Blue Nile price to the friend''s price! BN is on the high side, so the stones should be less from the friend or it would be a very bad deal.

I like good color and clarity as well, but I wouldn''t go higher than G and VS1 or 2 it were me. As a matter of fact, I''ll probably end up with H VS2! I have my eye on a pair of G VS1 AGS0 stones close to .80 that are around $8000 for the pair, though, so you''d save some significant money and still have very fine diamonds if you dropped just a little on the color and clarity. I''d consider F VVS1 more for a ring stone.
