Hi everyone!!

I must admit to being a lurker for quite some time here. I must say I have seen some amazing diamonds. I wish I was able to understand the best specs as such but it does confuse me a little so I am asking for some opinions on the following stone which is being considered. Please feel free to be as honest as neccesary.

1.2 carat
G color
VS1
total depth % 62.6
total diameter % 56
culet small
crown angle 35.5
pavillion depth % 43.3
girdle medium to slightly thick
cut excellent
symmetry excellent
polish v good

Kindest Thanks

Welcome!

Which lab report is it please, is it HRD, GIA etc?

Hi Lorelei!

I got this info from the diamonds stat thing, from the T&CO certificate ....

Looks good but if pavilion angle is present can you give us that number as HCA is more accurate with angles.

Hi misstips!

So this is a Tiffany diamond set in a solitaire? Are you buying it from the store? The pavilion angle would be useful if you have it please.

Hmmm, the angle isn''t actually provided at all on the diamond certificate. All it says regarding the pavillion is its depth % as 43.3%.
Is that no good?

It''s on the deeper side...but without the pavilion angle it''s hard to make a judgement. But you should know that Tiffany stones are not all on equal footing so it''s worth your time to scout out the best of the bunch.

When a diamond is on the deeper side then what does this mean? Does it affect fire/brilliance?

Sorry, i know im not that clever with diamonds.....

A pavilion on the deeper side has a chance that the pavilion angle will be too steep and resulting in light leakage hence not a sparkly diamond.

No worries, we all have to start somewhere! Basically the pavilion angle is a crucial ' engine' which drives light return in a diamond, you can have more leeway with a crown angle than you can with the pavilion. If the pavilion angle is too steep then that can reduce light return or sparkle that you see but what you want is a diamond which has angles which balance each other.

Are you buying this diamond from Tiffany?

Thanks everyone for your replies!!

Yes lorelei, this is a tiffany solitaire ring from T&CO. It only comes with its certificate and the GIA would be something Id need to arrange if I go ahead with the purchase.

Have we all established that this ring has too deep a paviliiopn then?? Are we sure.. or is it just a guess seeing as I dint have the angle, only the % of the pavillion?

43.3 with a "classic" small culet is around 41 degrees but you can tell for sure as it may be under or over that because small isn''t defined.
Its right on the border so if the angle is 40.9 its fine if its 41.1 then it has a little leakage but not enough to make it a bad stone just enough to remove it from the very top category.
Overall it is likely fine.

Well said Karl.

Many Thanks :)

Is there any way of testing the diamond so i can see for myself if there is light leakage?
In terms of brightness there is much, but i have seen a diamond with more fire and am wondering if the light leakage has much to do with it?

sure get an ideal-scope or an aset scope
http://ideal-scope.com/cart_order.asp

As to the second part crown/pavilion angle combo, table size, crown height, and lgf% would have more effect on fire than slight leakage.
