This is my first post but I have been reading and absorbing a lot of information from the posts here and I''d like some expert input. My bf and I have decided it''s time to start SERIOUSLY looking for rings. We started casually looking last year and instead bought a house (which is excellent, but not wearable and "blingy")

I always thought I would want a princess cut stone but after looking at a few rings in person I think a round really suits me better. Our budget is going to be in the $4500 range (with some wiggle room either way). I''d love a larger stone 1+ carat ideally, with a great cut (ideal/excellent preferred). I don''t mind warmer tones as far as color, clarity isn''t a huge issue either as long as I can''t see the inclusions (SI1 is probably my limit). I tried on a 1.3 ct SI1 in a store but it was priced at $8,000 (WAYYY out of the budget, especially for THAT stone) so that lead to an online search and happily I found this forum

I''ve been pouring over GOG''s site and LOVE the detail & information but it seems stock is kind of limited in our price range and in the just over 1 carat size. I''ve also checked out Whiteflash and James Allen, but neither provides the detail of GOG''s site (and sometimes they don''t have actual pictures of the stones up).

As for setting, I''d like something pretty classic. I was thinking about something with a nice solitaire center and paves down the sides OR something really unique like an antique/estate ring. My only problem with antique/estate settings is that they seem to often include an old cut diamond which is okay, but the older cuts (miner''s & euro''s) just don''t appeal to me like a round brilliant. Any input/advice on settings AND stones is really appreciated.

For the wedding band I''m thinking an eternity band with alternating diamonds and sapphires (but that will most likely be purchased down the line). Thanks so much for your help in advance!

Have you considered a halo setting? It'd give you the finger coverage you want with a slightly smaller (.80-.90 ct) center in budget.

Wow! Good instincts!! I actually wear a 2 ct. aquamarine, bezel set with pave diamonds in a halo and down the sides for an "everyday" ring. I LOVE that ring but I''m afraid it might be a little trendy for my e-ring?

I want my e-ring to be a permanent ring, and I don''t want to upgrade the stone down the line (which is why we were aiming for a 1+ ct stone at this point).

Thanks! I''ll check those out!

Does your $4500 budget include the price of the setting?

Most likely yes, but I don''t HAVE to have a designer setting and most that I''ve liked have been fairly inexpensive. $4500 isn''t completely concrete either, for the right stone or the perfect setting we can go up a little more.

So your $4500 budget includes the setting, give or take a little. Any preference for platinum, palladium or white gold? I''m trying to work your cost backwards to see that the diamond budget will be.

White gold. I haven't seen any palladium settings in person though.

ETA: For the diamond itself we're planning on spending $4,000 or so.

Those are gorgeous Gypsy! I really like this setting from bluenile:

I''m definitely more traditional when it comes to the setting, I like very thin bands and fairly plain looks overall.

That''s beautiful honey, and GREAT because I bet Wink (owner of HPD) can get you something really similar (if not exact). His settings aren''t really listed anywhere online but I think he will email pictures to show you what he can get it. Bluenile doesn''t sell thier settings separately from their diamonds but that''s a very classic style. Just send him the link if you like any of his diamonds and ask him for something like that.

This one is over budget, but may be worth a call to James Allen:

1.24 ct J, SI1 $4840 with PS wire discount

It's an AGS 0 Ideal, and it scores a 1.3 on the HCA. I only quickly glanced at it but didn't see any glaring issues.
