This is my first time ever shopping for a engagement ring. I have been browsing these forums over the past two months occasionally, trying to learn a few things about diamonds, but have yet to go ahead and pull the trigger on making a purchase.
1st, I am very budget conscious because of where we are in life (fresh out of college, lots of bills to pay).

I just have no idea though, how a smaller size round cut (about 0.50-0.80) will look on size 6 ring finger.

I''ve drawn up the idea that the ideal diamond for her would be in the above carat range, with a F-I Color, VVS2- SI1 Clarity and a price range of around $1200-$2200 for the diamond.

I''ve recently seen this one and thought it seemed nice: round cut diamond

The problem is, I don''t really have a clue what
A: the difference is between a "Signature Ideal" and an "Ideal" cut is.
B: How big of a role does the girdle thickness play in my purchase of a ring?
C: Is there a range of depth that my diamond should maintain to fit into a round-cut Pave setting (ex. Pave Round Setting) ?
and finally D: How safe is ordering from places like Whiteflash/Bluenile/JamesAllen etc., if something goes wrong with the ring, will they help me or should I simply take it to a local jeweler?

In the end, I just want to make the right decisions when choosing the ring for the one girl that I want to spend the rest of my life with.

Welcome to Pricescope!

Here is a lovely stone http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3823/ Good old Gold or this one from WF http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-540886.htm

The one you posted is nice; it is a VS1 F which to some maybe overkill. I have a VS2 and wouldn't mind a SI1 if it is eye clean. Just make sure they are eye clean.

Gary is has a tutorial that maybe helpful on your girdle question http://diamonds.pricescope.com/carat.asp

If something goes wrong w/the ring then they need to fix it. I bought my stone from WF and love it! Congrats on the upcoming proposal!

Well, I think you''re on the right track! I would stick to colors like H-I and even J (a well cut J will face up extremely white) in order to maximize your budget. With clarity, I''d shoot for an eyeclean SI1 or SI2.

I wouldn''t really listen to the "Signature Ideal" vs. "Ideal" stuff at BlueNile. What you should look for is an AGS 0 diamond because AGS grades for light performace. You can also run the numbers of diamonds through the Holloway Cut Advisor (located under the Tools link at the top of the page,)

Personally. I wouldn''t buy from BlueNile because they don''t offer any upgrade policy (where you can trade in your diamond for a more expensive stone later on if you''d like) and they don''t have as much information as other vendors do, such as Idealscopes and sarins.

You are definitely safe if you buy from a place like Whiteflash.com (great upgrade policy), GoodOldGold.com or another recommended PS vendor. I have personally worked with Whiteflash twice, once for my engagement ring and once for diamond earrings, and both times were great. I would also not hesitate to buy from GoodOldGold because of their stellar reputation. Other vendors I wouldn''t hesitate to work with are EngagementRingsDirect.com, WinkJones.com and JamesAllen.com. Those are probably the most popular and often used PS vendors.

If something goes wrong with the ring you could definitely mail it back to whatever vendor you went with originally and have them fix it for you. A lot of people recommend having a relationship with a good local jeweler for smaller things like rhodium plating white gold, checking that your prongs are secure, etc.

As for seeing what you can afford, definitely check out the PS search engine, check the AGS 0 box, enter in your color and clarity preferences and see what comes up in your price range!

You can also ask for specific recommendations of diamonds (I would start a new thread for that) and people will be happy to provide them for you.

About halfway down on this very helpful thread, that is very close to a 0.6 carat diamond on a size 6 finger. Hope this helps! If you want to increase the finger coverage, consider adding side stones or a halo.

I like the WF one that Skippy showed me, but how does one find out if a SI1 is eye clean??

Call the vendor and ask them to have a look for you.

What do you think of this diamond?

Whiteflash Diamond

with either the Divisi: Divisi

the basic but nice Flush Fit:
Flush Fit
or platinum Cathedral: (nice but honestly she likes White Gold)Cathedral Plat

thoughts or ideas?
Nice pick on the diamond -- I bet it will be a real sparkler. Here is another one you might want to consider if WF verifies it is eye-clean: http://www.whiteflash.com/round_ideal_cut/Round-Ideal-Cut-cut-diamond-471576.htm# It will come in just under the top of your budget after the PS discount, but it gets you close to the 3/4 carat mark.

I love the shape of the platinum cathedral setting. Maybe ask WF it they could make it in white gold and set the diamond a little lower? I''ve always thought the Divisi looks very cool, though it is a very different look than the cathedral. The Flush Fit setting is nice, but I prefer shape of the tapered cathedral on the platinum setting.
