Long story short...
I bought my wedding band and left the set at the store to be resized. I picked it up and noticed the bands didn''t fit flush together... They brought it back to the jeweler and came back a while later and handed me my diamond in two pieces...

After some arguing, they said they''d replace it with something equivalent but wanted to keep the broken diamond to recut and sell to make some money. (BTW: The broken diamond was a family heirloom!)
ANYWAYS... They brought in a new diamond, clarity I1 and color I. It''s so awful. I complained and they said my original diamond had a lot of inclusions, even though it only had 1 tiny one that was difficult to even find under 10x microscope. But after it broke I looked at it again and it did look really bad, but only AFTER it broke. So they brought in another I1 color J. Again, I complain. Now, they''ve ordered a. I1 F.
My original diamond was appraised in 1974 and the appraisal just says "very fine cut and color" with no official rating.
So here are my questions...

Was the rating system in affect in 1974?
How could they have broken the diamond originally?
And would the diamond cracking cause fishers throughout the rest of the diamond? Or would it be a clean break?

Sorry, I tried to make it short but there''s a lot going on...
Thanks for any help/info/advice

tawneelyn, I don''t know anything about the grading system in 1974, I just wanted to say I''m SO sorry this has happened to you. *hugs* I hope you get some satisfaction and that someone more knowledgeable chimes in soon.

Thank you Angeline!
I''m so disappointed that they''re trying to pawn off such low quality stones on me. I''m not dealing with a dinky local shop, it''s a huge chain, probably the "Biggest Engagemnt Ring Store" there is... without naming any names :)

I just had to say how sorry I am for what you are going through...........do not give into them, make them make this situation RIGHT. Without naming names, I know the store you're talking about.

I stopped in there to look at rings/stones when my ering stone broke a few months ago. I was not impressed with the "quality" of stones they were trying to SELL me, so I can only imagine how they are being when it's coming out of their "pocket". I am so so sorry........

Can you take the broken diamond and get an independent appraiser to give you an idea of what color etc it might have been? at least then the independent appraiser can maybe give you an idea on whether the fissures happened before or after the break. Maybe someone you and the store both agree on so they can''t accuse you of getting paying to get a better report if you know what I mean. I have no idea if it can even be done on a broken diamond. A few appraisers post here so hopefully one of them will see this thread.

Keep us posted.

That''s a good idea. As of now my original diamond has been sent to corporate (so they say) and they are "trying" to get it back to show me the fissures (which I saw and know they weren''t there before) but if I could get a professional to say so maybe I can convince them to give me better then an I1 :)
