I have been reading through lots of posts on this site and have been very impressed by the quality and quantity of the advice given by everyone here. This website in its entirety has been an enormous help to my engagement ring search. I was hoping to get some more personal advice.

Most of the posts I have seen here have been regarding diamonds that are, well let''s just say, out of my price range. My budget is more in the 5K range, and thus lots of the posts I have read do not necessarily help me.

My search results have been very limited because of my budget restaints and my perfectionist attitude. I, just like everyone else, wants to find the better quality for my dollar. The ranges I have been searching for are a 1ct round diamond, best cut possible, H-I color, and VS2-SI1 clarity diamond. Anything above that blows my budget to shreads unfortunately.

I had initially looked at Blue Nile, but now Im really liking White Flash... they just seem to give more info.

Here are a couple diamonds Ive seen that I really like
http://www.whiteflash.com/round_ideal_cut/Round-Ideal-Cut-cut-diamond-78292.htm#
http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/a-cut-above-h-a-cut-diamond-45607.htm#

Obviously the price difference makes a difference in my case. This is like a high and low price wise of what Im looking for.

Another aspect of my diamond purchase that I need some advice on is this: I have already purchased the setting, and will need to have the loose diamond I buy set into this ring. I have heard some really bad stories about jewelers switching diamonds, and thus have really been wary of buying a diamond without a laser inscription that I can use to verify before and after the diamond has been set that it is the same stone. What is everyone''s take on this? Am I over-reacting?

I really like the first stone above because of the value aspect, but it has no inscription. I guess I just need to hear from someone else what they think.

In advance, thanks for the advice.

Have you seen this one from Good Old Gold? http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/1927/ I think it might be my pick for your budget...

I'm not one of those people that really values an inscription very much, just a perk IMO.

I am no help as far as an opinion about the quality of a diamond or if you''re getting an okay deal. I do, however, have an opinion on the inscription. This is just from my personal experience - I did have a diamond switched. I''m sure it wasn''t a great quality diamond (22 years ago it was $2,000), 1 ct, but it had TREMENDOUS sentimental value. Your fiance will have to have her prongs checked, she may even have to have her prongs fixed (my other 1ct ering had to be sent in to have it''s prong fixed - totally broken off). You bet I checked the number when it came back. If it doesn''t have a number, I think you can have your diamond mapped for it''s inclusions (plotted out on a piece of paper), then when you get it back you can check it over. I''m so paranoid now, I was wondering if it was possible to take a lesser diamond and inscribe it with the same number. Sheesh... Good luck!!

Thanks FacetFire, that''s a pretty sweet rock as well! The inclusion is pretty gnarly, but all in all, its definately one to keep my eye on!

If you will be buying from a trusted PS vendor, I would send your setting to them and have them set it. You could have the diamond shipped to a PS appraiser before having the vendor set the stone. Then after it''s set, have the vendor send the completed ring back to the appraiser for confirmation and completion of the appriasal.

Get to know your diamond and where the inclusions are. Sometimes I think it''s really hard to see inscriptions unless you have a microscope.

I like your option #1, too. Have you asked WF if they''ll do an inscription for you...it may solve your problem.

Cpster suggests a thorough and potentially good approach. And...if you send it to an appraiser like Dave Atlas, he can do the inscription for you. I, too, think it''s good to have one of these, and is worth the incidental expense to try to have it done.

Sounds like you''re really almost there!

Actually, I don't think that inclusion would be very visable at all...it looks like a white inclusion, which are very difficult to spot. If I were you, I'd give GOG a call and ask them if it's eyeclean...if so, you'd get a lot of bang for your buck! It would face up a bit larger than the ones at WF.

But, if you are fixed on those two at WF, I like the first one.

I actually just spoke with someone ( I didn''t get their name ) from GOG about the diamond you had recommended. They said it was a really bright diamond, and the the inclusion could possibly be covered by a prong. They also said that they would do an inscription free of charge.

I didn''t ask about having them set it for me... that''s definately something to look into. For me, time is of the essence, as I already have plans to propose on the 14th of October, so I gotta get rolling!!!

Thanks everyone for your advice.

Haha, maybe that''s why I like it...it reminds me of my diamond, which is a really bright I SI2 with a slightly visable feather inclusion that could be covered by a prong. I actually love that I can find my inclusion when I really look up close or with a microscope...I never have to question if it''s actually my diamond. :)

Anyway, good luck!!! I''m a big fan of I colored diamonds, and I do agree with Lynn that you could go down to a J and still be really pleased and get more bang for your buck...

What is everyone''s opinion of GOG? If I send them stuff or buy from them, are they quality?

If you do a search, you should find many reviews and mentions of them. They are by far one of the most respected vendors that people discuss on this forum. I''ve read many reviews where people mention the amount of info available on GOG''s site made them feel very comfortable purchasing a diamond from them. I wouldn''t hesitate to buy from them from the things I''ve read on here. Actually, they have a stone I''m eyeing if I can manage to save some money. :)

I think Im going to get that stone you suggested FacetFire, it''s probably the best quality Ive seen for the price!!

I spoke with them again, and they said that they can do the inscription, set it, have it appraised and send it back to me, at which time I can get a second appraisal done. I bought a pretty nice setting, so they said that it would be a good idea to have the diamond and setting appraised together, which makes sense to me.

I agree, the amount of information on their site makes me really confident that I am getting a quality stone. The guys I talked to there are really cool and helpful. Thanks so much for recommending them, I had never visited that site before.

Oh, I'm so glad I could help! I think you'll be very pleased! Any chance you have a pic of the setting you are going to put it in, or link? We are huge picture fans here, so please do post some pics if you can when you get the ring...we'd love to see!
