Hello,

My girlfriend wants a really sparkly "big" diamond.
Well I'll do my best;

Anyway, I found for a reasonable price a diamond with the following Specs;

Carat weight 1.31
Shape Round
Cut Ideal
Color F
Clarity VS2
Length/width ratio 1.00
Depth % 62.4%
Table % 57.0%
Polish Excellent
Symmetry Excellent
Girdle Medium to Slightly Thick
Culet None
Fluorescence Faint
Measurements 6.99 x 6.96 x 4.35 mm

Now she sort of wanted a 1.5 carat diamond, and I did find one at the Si1 level, that is apparently "eye-clean" but I am leery because of its GIA report (see image) http://imgur.com/SgUJon6 ; it appears to have a lot of inclusions and it makes me nervous. Also someone else told me it's too 'deep'

Really need some help here'

So which one would you choose? The smaller diamond is about $500 less, but I feel like it may be better.

I look at it like this a really high quality well cut 1.31 CT diamond will look just as big as a poor performing 1.5CT diamond in my opinion. I'd go with the better quality diamond 9/10 times.

Given the specifications above, is the 1.3 a much better cut?

Your GIA report link didn't load correctly, so I can't compare the two.

I apologize for that, I didn't realize image hosting was not allowed.

Here is the 1.5 carat specs; This diamond, has 2 large clouds, and 4-5 crystals on the report as well as 1-2 feathers. The 1.3 has basically 1 crystal right in the middle.

Carat weight 1.50
Shape Round
Cut Ideal
Color F
Clarity SI1
Length/width ratio 1.00
Depth % 62.8%
Table % 55.0%
Polish Excellent
Symmetry Excellent
Girdle Medium to Medium
Culet None
Fluorescence Medium
Measurements 7.33 x 7.31 x 4.60 mm

Limit the depth to no more than 62.3 and preferably less than 62. When a stone is deep, it can make the stone face up smaller in diameter. I want a 1.5 ct stone to be closer to 7.4mm.

You also need to be looking at crown and pavilion angles as well. Aim for around 34-35 on crown angle and 40.6-41.0 on pavilion angle.

I'd drop to G-H VS2 and see what you can find. Those still are plenty white in a well cut stone. Look at vendors who supply magnified images of the stone as well as idealscope images.

I agree with the above post, i'd skip that 1.5ct to be honest with you, in my opinion the bigger the diamond the easier the inclusions become to spot with the naked eye, specially an SI1. So I'd drop down to a G or an H, they are plenty white still and bump up the clarity, or just find a "cleaner" SI1. Don't rush, take your time...and when you find the right diamond... it'll pick you. ;)

What color setting do you plan on using?

Ditto Diamondseeker.

Thanks for the advice,

I'm going to pass on the 1.5 c and am not torn between two 1.3 carats;

First we have this one;

Shape Round
Cut Ideal
Color F
Clarity VS2
Length/width ratio 1.00
Depth % 62.4%
Table % 57.0%
Polish Excellent
Symmetry Excellent
Girdle Medium to Slightly Thick
Culet None
Fluorescence Faint
Measurements 6.99 x 6.96 x 4.35 mm

Second we have (this appears to be cut better, but lower color grade)
Carat weight 1.31
Shape Round
Cut Ideal
Color G
Clarity VS2
Length/width ratio 1.01
Depth % 61.9%
Table % 57.0%

Culet None
Fluorescence None
Measurements 7.04 x 6.99 x 4.34 mm

Which is best?

If you girl wants "Big" and sparkly. Maybe try and going down to I SI1, to get more size. Play around with size, color and clarity, and see if you can find the biggest bang for your buck. Good luck with your search!
