Hello all,

I''m new and really need some advice.. I''m searching for an engagement ring for my girlfriend. I had been searching for the past couple of weeks for a ring, found the perfect one, but it cost too much, so I began looking for getting a loose diamond separately and having it mounted in my ring of choice. I''ve spent the last week or so on that but I found out from my jeweler today that I need to place the order (very) soon if they''re going to be able to deliver on time at the start of December.

This is the best option I''ve come up with so far and I could really use some feedback on it:

Barring the fact that I haven''t seen it yet, does this appear to be a good diamond for the money? I''m basically looking for a round cut no less than 4.8mm in diameter, and I''ve been trying to get at least an SI1 that''s mostly colorless. This is at the upper end of what I can afford but it''s the best I can find so far.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Agreed...best to deal with a vendor who has a really good reputation AND a great upgrade policy...Just make sure to ask about the first one, make sure it's eyeclean, etc.

Big fat ditto.

OK, thanks for the recommendations on another vendor, however the one I suggested is a fairly well-respected jeweler in my area so I think I can trust them. Does anyone have an opinion on the diamond I linked to? Are the specs on it good for the cost? Or is there something about this particular one that should make me worry?

#1: EGL is often off by a grade or two in clarity and color. You need to make sure what you THINK you are buying is what you are really buying and paying for.

#2: They don''t provide enough information to really assess the cut. But my bet is that it isn''t as ideal as they would have you believe.

Those are my major concerns...

1. the report on that diamond is from EGL Israel. Do a thread search on EGL Israel. Basically in a nutshell my personal (and not unusual) experience with prior lab report from them was they overgraded both color and clarity by two grades each, thus the diamond was worth thousands less than actually paid (fortunately was able to return). An independent appraiser can be helpful here. You just want to make sure you get what you actually pay for (meaning you pay a fair price for what you get - so if the grading is off, the price should be comparable to the true stats of the stone)
2. The price listed is high compared to other EGL stones, however you can expect to pay more to cover the overhead at a B&M. Is the stone at the jeweler who is setting it? Have you seen it yourself? If you have seen it and love it, I would only purchase this diamond if the sale was fully contingent on my having an independent appraisal (not someone who sells jewelry or says they are qualified because they work in the store and have a GG from GIA, but a TRUE independent appraiser) that met to your satisfaction (verify the stone''s stats and the worth of the stone, and help you evaluate the cut, etc)

If you could verify that the stone was eye-clean I don''t see why not. The reason I recommended that site in particular is because they have excellent customer service and are known for selling beautiful stones.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but isn''t it harder to get verification of an eyeclean stone from Bluenile?

Harder? Try next to impossible. You could always buy it and if it isn''t eye clean, return it.

Thanks for the advice all.. my shortlist right now is the Blue Nile link above and one of the I-colored James Allen diamonds that Danielle linked to above. Any more thoughts on these would be appreciated or anyone else''s opinions on Blue Nile vs. James Allen as companies to work with. It''s looking like I''m probably going to order one by tomorrow to get to my jeweler for setting next week. Thanks again for all of your help! :)

Do not get the BN stone, it only score a HCA of 5.9, almost useless cutwise.

The JA stone, 0.53c I VS2, looks good, HCA = 1.5. I will go for that.

If you want to buy from BN, this is a good candidate, AGS0 stone.

Just thought I''d report back to say I ended up purchasing the JA diamond that both Danielle and Stone-cold recommended. Thanks so much everyone for your help! I think I would''ve been up a creek without you guys.
