Hi all,

this is my first time posting although i have done alot of researching on here. any opinions is appreciated on this stone.

here is the info of the GIA report:
emerald cut
10.51 x 8.11 x 5.71
4.66 carat
depth 70.4%
table 60%
girdle slight thick to thick
cutlet none
polish good
symmetry good
clarity vvs2
color I
l:w ratio 1.30
fluorescence medium blue

does this sound like a good stone? good cut? etc....thank you very in advance.

it could be stunning-i like the blue fluor with the lower color grade-its a tad deep at 70% but i am more interested in the crown height? did they give you any pix or a sarin scan?

no they didnt give me a sarin. the crown height is not on the copy of the GIA report, where do i find that info? do you think that its because of the 70% depth that the stone looks a little smaller than some of the other 4 + carat emeralds i have seen? thanks so much for your help:-)

Yes, the 70% depth and the thick girdle will make the stone looks smaller than other 4+ ct. Your vendor should be able to get you the sarin when you ask for it, its not on the GIA Report. Maybe, vendor could also get you pix too? Just ask.

Hi sbingus,

Can you get detailed photos and an ASET image of the diamond please? That would tell us more. Have you seen it in person or is it with an online seller?

I have seen the stone in person. I am not knowledgeable with diamonds, i know my basics but it seems as if everything looks great to me heheheheheh! But I did notice right away that it was smaller than the other stones I have been looking at. I will call the store today and see if they can email me pics. I have been studying GIA reports and it does seem that the depth is too much. also the GIA report on this stone is dated sept. 11, 2003, what does that mean? Is it a used stone? Have they not been able to sell it in 6 years?? Perhaps because of the depth! Thank you all for responding, I will post more info when I get it.

Fancy shapes can hold weight differently to round diamonds so the depth doesn't always relate to face up size anyway. The depth itself isn't overly deep to me. What I would do if you have no other way of evaluating the diamond, check out as many others as you can to make sure this is the type you want ( bearing in mind that 4ct EC's aren't plentiful anyway) and either make the sale final on this diamond checking out with an independant appraisal - and choose an appraiser who is skilled in evaluating cut and has ASET scope technology available, or you can buy an ASET scope and use yourself. They are reasonably straightforward to use with a little practise. The age of the report might not be an issue, there could be various reasons why which aren't sinister, an appraiser will be able to give you a professional opinion on the diamond.

to be honest you cant say well i have seen bigger 4.66's because you could have seen shallow stones--you just cant know if all factors are comparable--it is more complicated than that. first-yes its a little deep but not crazily so. if the stone is stunningly beautiful and its deep and the price is set accordingly well then you may have a winner. Most Emerald cut stones as well as asschers and princesses are deeper than is "ideal" --however there are a great many beautiful deep stones out there that are aesthetically superior to many ideal depth stones. its a matter of three things 1)is it beautiful --to you and optically 2) does it look big enough for you and 3) is is priced fairly for what it is?

bgray- thanks for the info. you are right. the thing that concerns me with the stone is that the owner keeps saying that its an ideal cut stone and acted like I was strange when i mentioned it being a little too deep, i would appreciate for him to be honest with me or acknowledge the truth rather than to shove a stone down my throat. I believe that its priced well.

70% is a little deep and the price should be less for it.
70% can be fine with a high enough crown.

i called the seller to find out the crown height, left message. is it a calculation thats used or by measuring?

Ok I got the crown height...12.3. Whats your thoughts on this?

In the good range.
It really comes down to looks and price on this one.
