Hi all,

I'm just almost ready to buy a diamond but I need opinions on the proportions of it.
mydiamond.jpg

As you can see from the image, the star length is a bit short. Now from reading numerous other threads with similar circumstances, I've gleamed that this is supposedly a "safe" buy as it will only effect the fire a little bit (pinpoint flashes vs. bold?). With all the other measurements, do you think that this guy will still have good light performance?

Hi TBC,

This diamond definitely looks promising, as to the star facets, they can ' fine tune' the performance - i.e. the slightly smaller ' windows' of these facets might reduce the fire and scintillation one sees a little, but this is only a guess. Best thing to do is to get an Idealscope image of this stone so we can see how well all the proportions work together and ask an expert to inspect the stone and give you their opinion on how this diamond performs, including the very slightly smaller stars. I doubt you would have a problem but the star size is one of the many things worth taking into consideration and you did well if you are discerning with overall performance, to consider the star size along with everything else. It could be a beautiful stone, well worth further evaluation.

They are all nice settings that would work well with that size diamond you mention, does your fiancé have an active life? Pave can be problematic as it can be fragile, if the wearer is hard on her rings, then stones can be lost. If your lady is careful with her rings then it might not be an issue, I have worn a pave band for years with no problems, but it's just worth bearing in mind.

I hope I don't lose a stone now, having said that.... :errrr:

Thanks for the feedback Lorelei,
here is the IS for this diamond.

The IS looks excellent, I can't see any issues there. The next thing to do is to ask for one of the vendor's gemologists to inspect the stone for you and describe its performance. They should be able to let you know if the slightly smaller stars are impacting the above components of performance, unlikely but best to check. Also I don't know the colour and clarity of the stone but if it is of SI clarity, make sure the diamond is eye clean to your specifications and that the colour grade will be to your liking.

It should be a beautiful diamond, well done!

Then I just need to pick a setting >.<

I was originally leaning towards channel for the reasons you listed but couldn't find one that I liked (well, I found one or two but they didn't look good with diamonds under 1ct)

Ive narrowed it down to 4 settings.

This one is my favourite visually but i'm not sure if the G-H side stones would look bad with the F diamond i picked out. That and it looks like stuff could get caught in it all the time.

This one is probably second favourite visually but I'm not sure if the bumps on the side would irritate my fiancee's fingers

This ones basket is a bit boring but other than that i like it

This one i'm not sure if the side stones would overshadow the .83ct diamond

Out of the settings you have narrowed it down to #2 is by far my least favourite. In the real life example with the .83c centre, the details on the setting look mushy, and the thick metal details flanking the stone make it look smaller.

And #4 is my favourite of the settings you've proposed. There is a .82c example shown, and the sides don't seem to overpower a centre of your size, but bring in some extra bling, and compliment it. This style looks classic and elegant to me.

I generally love scrollwork and milgrain and all of the vintage-y components of your #1 setting, this one in particular honestly just doesn't do a lot for me. I've seen much nicer at this pricepoint from Gabriel NY, but then you don't get the ease and advantages of one stop shopping.

I also like #4 the best. Simple and elegant! The #2 setting looks very uncomfortable and #1 seems a bit busy to me although it is pretty.
