First post here, but been on the hunt for my perfect diamond for quite some time and reading these forums has been EXTREMELY helpful. I set out with a budget of $15,000 and wanted to find a 1.5 - 1.7 round brilliant with: Ex / Ex / Ex / H / VS2.

I recently found the following diamond from a trusted family jeweler and wanted to get some opinions on it as I think it might be a good deal for me.

It's a 1.9 ct RB with the following specs.

Price: $16,500

Carat: 1.9 RB
Color: I
Clarity Grade: VS2
Cut: Very Good
Polish: Excellent
Symetry: Excellent
Flor: Medium Blue

I was told the Medium Blue helps the color and it looks much whiter than I. More of an H-G color.

LINK to the GIA report: https://myapps.gia.edu/ReportCheckPortal/getReportData.do?&reportno=1115280583&weight=1.9

Please let me know what you think, thank you!

it looks like a great stone, you want to see the stone under different lights and make sure the blue flour doesn't give diamond the cloudy look which some of them do.
here is some other option you can think about. BDG's blue diamond line is selected to not have the cloudy look with the blue flour.

this one is $15k but right now they are running a 10% off special on their I,J,K color blue line until the end of this month which will be around $13.5k
Keep in mind that if you don't live in TX you don't have to pay tax but buy from your local store you will have to add that into it which can easily put your stone over $17k

Thanks for the reply, will do!

I forgot to mention the HCA rating on this stone is 0.8.

yes i checked that. I also just edited my post again so not sure when you read it =)

The thing that is kicking it out of excellent is the thick girdle, I believe. I would just take a close look at the diamond all the way around to make sure it doesn't look funny going from medium to thick. It could just be a small area that is thick, though.

One other bit of advice. Don't pay the asking price. If you decide you want it, then tell him you like it a lot but that your max budget really is $15k. See if he comes down. Be prepared to walk out and see if he calls with a lower pricew. But yes, I think the price is fine and I think an I color with MBF is a good buy. Medium blue shouldn't be a negative.

Any possibility of getting an idealscope image? What about a close-up photo of the arrow pattern?

Looks like your family jeweller pulled through for you! You've seen it in-person, what did you think? Price sounds good, cut grade dropped to VG b/c of the thick girdle but the stone faces up well and the numbers are fine otherwise.

It's a 2010 report so I'd have it checked over to confirm that it's in the condition described on the GIA report - no wear and tear since then. Your jeweller should have a microscope, and can show you what's what - if you want further assurance you can have an independent appraisal done on the loose stone, too.

ETA: I like DS' idea of negotiating (though I do think the asking price is fair). Also to think about (and potentially negotiate with) - do they offer any buyback/upgrade/trade-in policies? If so you'll want to get those details in writing, signed and dated.

ETA: med blue fluor won't make any difference in any lighting that does not have a strong long-wave UV component, and perhaps not even then. So no, it's not going to face up like a G/H, don't go into this expecting to be able to compare it to Gs and Hs and see no differences. But there's nothing wrong with the way a nice I faces up - still looks perfectly *white*!

Great insight exactly what I was looking for. Thanks alot guys! I'll keep you posted.
