Hello,

I am new to the diamond world, but I am in the process of giving my girlfriend of two years an engagement ring. She likes the Princess-style cut and wants it on a solitaire setting. From going to the jewelry store as well as her initial thoughts before doing so, sparkle and size are the most important thing to her. From looking at a few diamonds, it was determined that as long as the color was not below an H, and the size was as close to 2 carat as possible and had brilliant sparkle, she would be more than happy. The jeweler at the store showed us a few diamonds, and one sparkled less than others and indicated that it was due to the "clarity" of the diamonds. All of the diamonds he showed us were of the "very good" cut, but ranged in clarity (the SI-1 and -2's appeared to have more sparkle than than those in the "I" range). From research, it appears the clarity would not have an effect on sparkle however, as it is the quality of the cut that would effect the diamond.

We looked at diamonds that had some inclusions that could be seen with the naked eye and those that could only be seen with the magnifier. She said she didn't care as long as the sparkle was there. If buying online, I would've liked to pay no more than $11,500 for the diamond, but am willing to go a bit beyond that if it will make a difference with the sparkle. That being said, I found this diamond, and have included the ASET, idealscope, and actual images. What do you think? It's a princess, excellent cut, VS2 (according to GIA).

Clouds in SI1 and SI2 that make the diamond hazy/sleepy is very common once you know what to look for. If under additional comments it says something like "clarity is based on clouds not shown" in SI grades, it is almost certainly hazy.

As to the stone you picked... it is a little leaky but is not bad at all and if its under 11500 for a 2ct H VS2, I think that's a very good price.

This diamond was actually priced at $13,040, so I'm not sure how good of a diamond this is for the price or if I need to be looking in another direction. Again, the most important things are size (close to 2 ct) and sparkle. In reference to your comments, Julia- would it be worth looking into SI-1 and -2 but make sure to specify with the seller either or not these inclusions are associated with clouds?

Sparkle wise I'd say that stone above is average. The ASET is OK but as already commented a fair bit of leakage. The facet pattern is attractive though. The price also seems to be fair for the size/specs providing it looks attractive to you IRL.

A really well cut super sparkly 2ct H/I stone without ugly inclusions seems to be starting from around $16,000 and I'm not sure if the extra several thousand would be worth the spend to you or if its even a possibility financially. I'd personally go with a smaller stone to get the extra sparkle for your original budget but if your GF really wants a 2ct then the diamond you found seems to be a good choice.

Here are some alternative ~2ct princesses to give you an idea of where your stone sits compared with those currently available on-line (the last two have no ASETS some unknown performance):

This is the closest ideal cut I could find for less than $12,000

Its a fair bit smaller but beautiful.

Its still very nice for the price.

I think an 11.5K budget for your specs and top notch cut is unrealistic.

Thank you for your replies! I appreciate your research and input. It looks I'll need to be less strict on one of the specifications to try to get below the $11,500 mark and maintain the ~2 carat size. I may start looking into the SI-range rings. As long the inclusions aren't COMPLETELY obvious to the naked eye (i.e. unless you were really brought it close to the eye), and it creates a good sparkle, she would be happy. If sparkle and the ~2 carat are most important, do you think it would be worth looking into the SI-range? As I understand, cut is the most important in creating the visual "sparkle", but inclusions can affect sparkle as well if one of the inclusions on the diamond is clouding?

The size difference between the 1.74 posted and a 2ct of indeterminate cut is going to be less than half a millimeter.

I personally would trade that half a millimeter for AGS0 performance on a princess, especially since you keep bringing up sparkle. That 1.74 will have it in spades.
