I''m from Pittsburgh and have gone to a couple family owned Diamond shops looking for the perfect engagement ring. I found what I believe to be a beautiful diamond, but since I''m not an expert I would really appreciate any input the experts on this forum can offer. Two questions: 1) Does the cut look ideal? and 2) Does the value/price seem reasonable? Here is the info. that I have on the stone from the AGS Report:

Report Date: January 20, 1996
Measurements: 7.29 - 7.32 x 4.53 mm
Weight: 1.511 cts.
Total Depth: 62.1%
Table 54.7%
Girdle: Thin to slightly thick, faceted
Cutlet: Pointed
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Color Grade: AGS 2.0 (H)
Clarity Grade: AGS 6 (SI2) -- Eye clean
Fluorescence: Negligible
Crown Angle: 36.1 degrees
Pavillion Angle: 40.1 degrees
Price: $8,995

My concern is that there is no cut grade given and the owner is going to call AGS on Monday to see if they can issue a cut grade or if he has to send it back to the lab. I ran the cut angles through the HCA and it scored 0.9 Excellent, Excellent, Excellent, so I now feel much better about the stone from that standpoint. Should I pull the trigger and make the purchase?

Also, thanks to everyone on this forum for helping to educate me on the dimaond buying process!

Looks good, maybe a little too good... :P Must get it independently appraised to make sure that the stone you bought is the one on the cert.

They did not include cut grades in 1996.

It scores 0.9 on the HCA and anything below a 2 is considered worth looking into. Any chance you can get an ASET or photo to show us? It seems like it has potential if it matches the AGS cert.

The price is reasonable. With the old report it may be a trade-in and you''d want to make sure it was in tip-top shape and not chipped or scratched. Nothing wrong with a used stone but it''s been around for 12 years and should be checked out by an independent appraiser (if this is the one you decide on).

It can not be AGS 0 - it has opnly ex ex pol and sym. One day AGS should change that because the director of the Lab, our dear friend Peter Yantzer, has said he can not see such differences in terms of the beauty of the diamond at even lower grades.

This should be a firey stone. Personally I avoid them when they have short lower girdles which make the table appear dark sometimes.
An ideal-scope photo will help us help you - or as advised - use a good appraiser - not an avergae one

Thanks for the input. I made a typo, the date on the AGS certificate is January 20th, 2006. Thanks.

No need to pull the trigger until the cut grade comes back...

As Garry says, an Idealscope will be very useful.
