hard without the idealscope AND hard without the crown/pavilion angles. since it has a cut grade, you should be able to get the angles.

It does indeed look on the deep side, and the table larger than we normally see here, do you have any others you are interested in? If you could get the angles for this diamond, then that would make it clearer if this might be a decent performer or not.

There are plenty others I'm interested in

I guess I just need to take some time to comb through their inventory. I'm planning on asking the vendor to locate two diamonds and bring them in-house for me to see in person.

I would try and keep the depth at 62 or below, and the girdle at STK at worst. This will help it face up as it should.

Also, try and keep the table between 54-57.

I thought so, too. The only problem is that I''m two hours away from the vendor and I live with my girlfriend. I''m having a hard time thinking of a good enough fib that lets me get away for the day. I guess I could say business travel, but not sure if she would buy it.

Thats tough but so worthwhile actually being able to see the diamonds in person. Does she know a ring is in the offing??

Does she know? Yes and no. She knows it''s time for it to happen, but I''m not sure if she realizes it actually IS going to happen.

Would it be possible to take a personal day at work, or at worst, call in sick (of course, not from home if she's there), and then spend the day shopping?

I was going to say, if you had discussed getting a ring with her, then you could mention what you were planning perhaps that you were diamond shopping for her, but as you haven't - Ellens ideas would work....

I don''t know if I should be pleased I may have come up with a good ruse (lie) or not....

Since you are having the vendor bring in the stones; here''s a nice set of parameters to get started with:

table 54-57%
depth 60-62%
crown angle 34-35
pavilion angle 40.6 to 41
polish and symmetry should be at least very good to excellent

As for the excuses, I''m in agreement with Ellen. A sick day or personal day is a good idea. Just make sure she doesn''t see you at home or around town, otherwise she''ll know you are up to something.

Thanks for the parameters. Given my own criteria (Ideal cut, F-G, VS2-SI1, .75 ct or larger), which of the ones that you mentioned are the least important? I did another search and I would find one with a great cut, great depth, but larger table than you said above and then one with a great table, but too deep. I know there has to be a sacrifice somewhere. Where do you suggest?

NH,

Consider trying to use the HCA. Don't sacrifice, and only ball park where necessary. Keep it to 0 - 2, primarily. That's for starters (since the idea is to exclude options not falling in 0 - 2). Let HCA do the work.

...(eta)...though I see that was among the first suggestions here...

These parameters that I gave earlier are for you to help narrow down your choices. Once you find a few of these, enter their stats into the HCA. The HCA helps grade the cut whereby anything between 0 and 2 are most likely to be great looking diamonds with ideal cuts. The depth and table sizes are all part of the cut; everything works together, not one or the other. If anything I will not sacrifice on the cut.

There are in actuality 5Cs
1. Cut (tops in my book)
2.gif

2. Carat (althought that is the weight, not the physical measurement)
3. Colour (G/H are very nice choices and very white especially in round stones under 1 carat)
4. Clarity (eye clean SIs are a good safe choice)
5. Cost

If I had to play around with my budget, I''d go down to a H SI1 combo. If not colour sensitive, I''d even go down to an I.
