I''m about to buy an engagement ring, round w/ 2 baguettes, direct- not from a jeweler. I''ll need to take it somewhere to get sized. I figure I should also get it appraised at the same time.

Can anyone recommend a reputable jeweler in North Jersey that would size and appraise a ring not purchased at their store? Or at least just sized- looking through some posts I see some places that will be fine for the appraising.

Also, the ring is already set and I think its at a size 7. Could this ring be sized down to a 3.5?

Also, if my gf''s ring size is 3.5 should I get it sized to that or something a little bigger just in case?

Oh also here are the specs of the ring from GIA report, I think I''m picking a good one:

MEASURING APPROX. 6.44 x 6.48 x 3.99 mm
WEIGHT: 1.01 ct
DEPTH: 61.8 %
TABLE: 55 %
GIRDLE: thin to med, faceted
CULET: none
COLOR: G
CLARITY: VS1
FLUORESCENCE: None
POLISH/SYMMETRY: VG/VG

Essentially I want the rock that goes to the jeweler to be the same rock when I get it back. I think the whole concept of proposing has gotten me all paranoid!

Sorry if these are dumb questions- this is my 1st (hopefully last) time getting engaged.

Thanks!

One word of caution about sizing (I learned through personal experience)...from a 7 to a 3.5 is a HUGE jump. If you have baguettes on the ring, there is a good chance that any jeweler you go to will have to reset the baguettes to make sure they don''t break or fall out after the sizing. I have baguettes on my rings and when I sized them down from a 6.5 to a 6, they had to do this with my rings and it was an ALL day process!! There may be some extra cost involved as a result...

If you don''t want the baguettes reset, I suggest you try finding something that''s in her size...because if the jeweler doesn''t know what they''re doing, you could run into problems...

First, thanks for both of your replies.

I''m getting a really good deal on the ring- really the center stone, which is why I want to buy the whole thing- I can''t buy the stone separately.

I dont mind having the baguettes reset. I also wouldnt mind taking the stone out and exchanging the current setting for a similar one (maybe in platnum, this is white gold). Would a jeweler do a trade in like that?

Thanks again,

Raj

You may want to take the stones out and find a setting that you prefer. Going from a 7 to a size 3.5 is a huge jump. They would need to remove the stones I would think and then reset them. If you don''t love the setting find a jeweler who would take the original setting as a trade in for a new one. This way you are giving your girl a brand new setting and not risking any problems to the stones while having it resized. just my 0.2, HTH.

Your 0.2 is well appreciated. I''m thinking along similar lines.

This setting is exactly what my gf wants, just sized too big! Or she needs to tack on a few pounds...

The ring''s actually a 6.5. And I think I''d want it set to a 4, just in case. I hear (from this forum) that its easier to go down than up. If that cant be done w/o too much fuss, then I''ll go the route of swapping the stones into a new setting.

So does anyone know of a good jeweler in Northern NJ or NYC that could work all this mojo for me? Or someone with a shrink ray? Any mad scientists on the board?

Thanks,

Raj
