I've narrowed my search for engagement rings down to two. One is from blue nile. It's .33 carat, f color, IF, signature ideal cut for about $1200. Also a classic Tiffany that's .23 carat, I color, vs2 for about 1800. My girlfriend has stated that she definitely wants a good quality stone under half a carat. Which is why I like the blue nile one. But she has also stated that she would love a Tiffany ring. Is Tiffany worth the extra cash for a lesser quality and smaller diamond?

What is your maximum budget? I would not pay for IF clarity ever. I'd go with VS and get a slightly larger stone closer to a half carat.

Why not a VS2 stone from blue Nile? You can get either a larger stone (under half carat) or
Save yourself some money.

My choice would be a larger non -Tiffany ring.

Does she like Tiffany's for the name brand or just the classic 6 prong Tiffany solitaire. That's kind of a personal choice issue. ALmost any vendor will have a Tiffany style solitaire you can put a stone in that's around a half c for less than you could do at Tiffany's. You may also want to consider taking the long view and looking at all the upgrade policies of places you are considering purchasing from. SOme, like Tiffany's will require you spend at least double and do it within a certain time frame, if I remember correctly. Other places have a double policy like Blue Nile but I don't think there's a time frame.

I agree with DS above - unless you or your GF have a specific desire for an IF-clarity stone, I would go with a VS2 diamond and go with closer to the half-carat weight your GF wants. And, keep in mind, many SI-1 clarity stones can be eyeclean as well.

If you can provide the GIA report number and carat weight, or the Blue Nile link, for the F-IF stone, we can give you some feedback on that stone. And only you (and your GF) can decide whether the Tiffany brand is worth the extra cash... I can tell you you could buy a larger, better-cut diamond in a Tiffany-style setting for about the same price.

As a suggestion, since you and your GF like the look of the classic Tiffany setting, maybe you'd like one of these diamonds from Brian Gavin Diamonds:
1. 0431ct F-VS2 H&A - http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/d.../0.431-f-vs2-round-diamond-ags-c-104063531059
2. 0.458 H-VS2 H&A - http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/d.../0.458-h-vs2-round-diamond-ags-c-104065098003
3. 0.471ct I-SI1 H&A - http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/d.../0.471-i-si1-round-diamond-ags-c-104063713020

combined with one of their Tiffany-style settings:
Classic Tiffany Style knife edge - http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/e...ffany-style-knife-edge-18k-white-gold-5336w18
Classic Tiffany Style half round - http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/e...ffany-style-half-round-18k-white-gold-5478w18
Tapered Tiffany Style half round - http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/e...ffany-style-half-round-18k-white-gold-5540w18

Any one of these diamonds with any one of these settings will be under $2,000 - and if you do contact BGD make sure you tell them you are a PS member so they will give you the PS member discounted rate on the diamond (which I think roughly equates to the wire price listed, but I may be wrong).

Of the two you listed I would rather have the .33, F, IF. Better color, bigger size, perfection!

Big difference between a half carat and a quarter carat.

If you don't need the paperwork, maybe this? Tiffany can authenticate it.

Tiffany won't authenticate anymore if you don't have the name of who it is, or paperwork, or something, I can't remember..... but you can't just take a ring in anymore I guess.

Good to know!

i know right! what a shame!

now i know this scores over a 2 on the HCA scale, but, personally, based on the look of it, the near colorless J, and good clarity, not to mention size, would get an idealscope of this
