I am in the process of buy a Tacori ring for my girlfriend. It is the Ht 2258 (Pave setting) It comes in 18k or platinum. The platinum is almost 1000k more than the white gold. Is it really worth the price to get platinum? I also think white gold look nicer and love the fact that you can get it redipped an bring back the luster to make it look new. Does anyone also know if you get a tacor white gold ring if the prongs are white gold as well or platinum? People keep saying that platinum lasts longer, but I know several people up there in age with white gold rings and there rings look fine to me. Any suggestions?

Platinum is recommended for pave because it is more malleable and more likely to really hold the stones even after many years of wear. Also, you can get platinum polished to easily restore the sheen, so I wouldn't let the fact that WG can be redipped make a decision for me!

If she swims/cleans a lot and doesn't want to always be taking her ring off it is also good to know that chlorine and ammonia can really hurt WG over time.

As for the prong issue, MOST WG rings do have platnium prongs, for the same reason that they recommend platinum for pave. But that doesn't mean all do, so it's better to ask your jeweler.

If it''s engraved at all, then you won''t be able to polish it as much if platinum, it will wear the engraving down.

I don''t know the statistics of the pave with platinum, it sounds reasonable that they would hold up better (and most center stones seem to be set in platinum). I know of two white gold pave rings (mine (single row) and my best friend''s (3 row)) that have held up very well. None of the stones have ever been loose when checked. Both rings, however, are under 2 years old. Neither of us wear our jewelry cleaning, swimming, etc. I usually prefer a white gold setting because it''s shinier and brighter. I actually dip my 14kyg wedding set in rhodium (my friend also dipped hers) and have also had good luck with that. Maybe a few more PSers can give you their experiences.

Good Luck!

It would be good to hear from some jewelers on this, but two local jewelers told me that they had lots of trouble with losing stones in Tacori platinum rings. Sundial has a beautiful pave ring by Hearts on Fire, and it is 18k white gold, I believe. I don''t think she has ever had a problem with hers. So I''d personally consider white gold since the soft platinum Tacori uses sometimes doesn''t seem to hold the pave very well.

Thanks for all the good adivce! I think I am still leaning towards the white gold, but we shall see.

I didn''t know Tacori offered 18k WG (only YG).

Is this new?

Not sure if it is new, but Tacori does have 18k gold rings.

Hmmm....didn''t know that. Mine is PLT and I have only lost one diamond melee & one sapphire in almost 2.5 years (and I don''t baby it) both were replaced at no cost to me (not even shipping). I love the weight of PLT and have been told engraving is better in PLT but only you know your budget and if that $1000 can be used on a nicer diamond or wedding band that is something to think about.
